Atacama Summer Immersion Program (in English)

This four-week program based in the Antofagasta region of northern Chile is designed for students to learn about the main regional industries of astronomy, mining and architecture and the impact of these activities on the regional and national economy. Through the program students will also connect the role of engineers to the development of technologies used throughout the region in the areas of observational astronomy, copper mining and architecture.
Students will participate in coursework, practical field actives and excursions, including 6 days in San Pedro de Atacama, where they will be able to meet and travel through the driest desert in the world, enjoying its landscapes, architecture and its wonderful skies.
The program includes:
- Accommodation in a local homestay
- Three meals per day (breakfast, lunch, dinner) and snacks during field activities
- City tours and tickets to museums, parks and other attractions
- Certificate of completion for the program
- Six-day San Pedro de Atacama excursion. During the Atacama excursion students will experience Lascar Volcano trekking, Moon Valley, the Tatio Geyser, Altiplanic Lagoons, Astronomic Observatories, and Caracoles Street
Course Description
During this four-week program students will enroll in three courses for a total of 45 hours of instruction (equivalent to 3 U.S. credits):
Astronomy: Modern and Observational Astronomy
The course introduces basic concepts for the current understanding of the Cosmos from the beginning of astronomy to the present understanding of the Universe and teaches basic concepts of observational astronomy, including practical experiences in the field.
Mining Economy: Introduction to the Economy of Antofagasta and Chilean Mining
The course will introduce to the students the characteristics of the mining industry applied to the Chilean context and the Antofagasta region.
Architecture: Architecture and Heritage
The aim of this course is to promote the conservation and (re)use of buildings and sites of the Modern Movement, to promote and disseminate the development of appropriate techniques, methods of conservation and (re)use, to explore and develop new ideas for the future of a sustainable built environment, based on the desert architecture and practical experiences, including field visits to iconic sites in the area.
