Virtual Spanish and Health in Latin America (in English, Spanish)
Passionate about global health and looking to gain skills in medical Spanish? The International Center for Development Studies Spanish and Health in Latin America program is now offered online for Winter 2021!
Gain insight into Latin American healthcare systems and the practical experience needed to work and interact with patients and colleagues in a Spanish-speaking environment while earning up to 6 U.S. credits over 10 weeks.
Designed by ICDS in collaboration with Universidad Latina and Hospital Clínica Bíblica, Spanish for Health Sciences and Health Care in Latin America are virtual classes ideal for students majoring in Global Health, Health Sciences, International Development, Latin American Studies and Spanish.
Course content is uniquely rooted in the Costa Rican and Latin American context, giving students access to professors with decades of experience teaching these subjects. Through interaction with their professors and guest speakers students will develop knowledge about and the ability to function within Latin American healthcare systems.
Course Description
While the two classes that form part of this program are intended to complement each other, students may choose to enroll in either one or both of the courses offered.
Coursework will include a combination of online recorded and live lectures and webinars, group discussions and student presentations, readings, case study development, group and individual student-teacher meetings and more. Students can expect to be evaluated through individual and group assignments, essays and exams.

COURSE DETAILS
Intermediate Spanish for Health Sciences (3 U.S. Credits)
This is an intensive Spanish-for-specific-purposes course designed to provide students in the health fields with the necessary language proficiency to work and interact in a Spanish-speaking environment. Students develop vocabulary in the health and medical field which will allow them to interview patients, complete patients’ files, complete medical reports and read texts of medical relevance effectively. There will also be a focus on understanding cultural differences and an introduction to Latin American health care systems.
Syllabus - Intermediate Spanish for Health Sciences
Health Care in Latin America (3 U.S. Credits)
Designed and taught in collaboration with Hospital Clinica Biblica, this course is intended to create a unique interdisciplinary experience for students interested in Latin American and Caribbean health issues. Within the field of public and private health, its particular focus is on public health assessment strategies. Through this course students will be exposed to current challenges facing Latin America and the Caribbean to reach an understanding of the way global public health issues unfold in the region. The course will provide students with concepts and updated material that will prepare them to look into issues related to people, places, and politics to assess the delivery and quality of health care in Latin America.

The Health Care in Latin America course is taught in English and does not require Spanish language experience.
Students planning to take the Intermediate Spanish for Health Sciences course should have at least two semesters of university-level Spanish experience (min. A2 level on the CEFR scale).
