From sand dunes to the Atlas mountain range, there truly is no place quite like Morocco. In the countryside, you'll find Roman ruins and Portuguese citadels all while just a train ride away from mouthwatering coastal seafood platters.

Most cities have an old, cozy Islamic quarter and a Ville Nouvelle (new city), that has a more European flavor. While most international travellers find there way to the medinas for the taste of 'real' Morocco, in Ifrane, you will actually more likely find yourself around Moroccan tourists. Known as the Moroccan Switzerland, Ifrane is nestled in Atlas mountains, covered in beautiful chalet architecture.

Al Akhawayn University offers seven undergraduate degrees from among three schools, science and engineering, business administration, and humanities and social sciences. Fourteen graduate degrees are offered in addition to executive education and special programs for continuing education. All courses are delivered in English. Language classes are offered in French, Arabic, Spanish and Berber.

Of special interest are courses in history and political science that focus on North Africa and the Middle East. Arabic language courses are also offered in Modern Standard Arabic. Arabic is not offered at all levels each semester and students should refer to the course catalog for level selection.

Course Description

Students can use the course catalog to find appropriate classes. Students should also have some flexibility when choosing courses, as course schedules may not be finalized until the start of the semester.

Architecture and Engineering courses have limited seats.

Language Courses

Students beyond the beginning level must take a placement test and may not register until after results are posted during the orientation for all foreign language classes. The host institution ultimately determines your proficiency level and course eligibility.

Arabic

• Modern Standard Arabic is offered in addition to regular classes during the academic year and semester for beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. Beginner I is offered in both the fall and spring semesters. There are three contact hours per course.

• Moroccan Arabic is available for students who have had a semester of Arabic or who are familiar with Arabic script.

• All Arabic as a second language classes are offered subject to minimum enrollment.

French and Spanish

• Beginning French and Spanish as foreign languages are offered each semester. Intermediate French is offered as well, but intermediate Spanish is dependent on demand.

• French majors should be aware that all French classes with the code FRN are for students who use French as a second language with professional needs. There are no courses in literature or culture taught in French. Very advanced French speakers could be placed into a class of Moroccan students.
