University of Essex is highly regarded for teaching and research in the social sciences and humanities with the departments of government and sociology ranked as the top in the U.K., and economics ranked fourth. Essex was one of the first European Universities to offer both law and social science degrees in human rights. Being 4th in the UK for research excellence, we are a unique community of scholars who live, work and play together, backed by donors such as Sir Winston Churchill who believed in our vision of a new type of university for a new age. With a student population of around 12,000 from more than 137 different countries, Essex is the ideal community to experience UK higher education. Our academic offer is varied, with strong areas to include accounting/finance, business, computer science/gaming, mathematics, psychology, art history, linguistics, sports science, film, theater studies, history, philosophy, criminology and biological sciences. Home to over 13,000 students from more than 130 countries, our Colchester Campus is the largest of our sites, making us one of the most internationally diverse campuses on the planet - we like to think of ourselves as the world in one place.
The Campus is set within 200 acres of beautiful parkland, located two miles from the historic town centre of Colchester – England's oldest recorded town. Our Colchester Campus is also easily reached from London and Stansted Airport in under one hour.
The campus squares are always buzzing with life. With shops, a bustling street market, restaurants, bars, a theatre, a cinema, a hairdressers, and even a nightclub; it's possible to survive your time at Essex without ever actually leaving campus (not something we recommend, but you get the idea...).
When you join Essex, you’ll automatically gain over 11,000 new brothers and sisters – your Students' Union family. This lot won’t steal your clothes, tell on you, or fight you for the TV remote – they’re here to support you, make sure you get your voice heard, and help you make the most of your time at Essex.
You can meet like-minded people or try out something new with our Students' Union's 165 sports clubs and societies. From the departmentally-focused and culturally-based, to the downright weird and wonderful (Harry Potter Society, anyone?), there's an SU society for everyone. Whether you enjoy cringing through those 'so-bad-they're-good' films, have a passion for cheese and wine, want to gain even more support and experience in your subject, or just want to see some friendly faces from your home country, the chances are there'll be a club or society for you to join.
Essex Abroad has a dedicated team of advisors to support you during your time with us. You can call, email, book 1-2-1 appointments with advisors, or drop-into the Essex Abroad office. We also have a dedicated Student Services Hub to keep you happy and healthy – physically, mentally and emotionally. If you need some information, advice or support, or just want to talk, the Student Services Hub has it covered.
