This diversity of academic and scientific programs combined with high-quality research and its central location in a vibrant city in the heart of Germany, make the Leibniz Universität Hannover (University of Hannover) an attractive study destination.

At the heart of the campus of the University of Hannover lies the impressive Welfen Castle, built for King George V of Hannover. This famous landmark houses central administrative and student services as well as a couple academic departments.

The university opened in 1831 with 64 students; today around 30,000 students are enrolled in its more than 90 academic programs, among them are 4,000 international students. Additionally, over 4,000 academics and scientists work at the university in nine faculties with over 160 departments and institutes. 

Students can take advantage of facilities such as the "TIB", the largest technical information library in Germany, the student association, and research centers such as the laser lab, the center for water-wave experiments, the production engineering center, a computer center, a sports center and a language center. 

Hannover has much to offer: museums, a professional soccer team, a fireworks competition and various festivals. From Hannover one can reach cities like Berlin, Bremen and Hamburg by train in less than 2 hours. For a long weekend one can plan trips to Denmark, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Poland and the Czech Republic.

  Leibniz University is a typical German or European University. The main building is the Welfen Castle, a 19th centrury castle built for the last King of Hannover. It now houses administrative offices, student services, a university shop, a sandwhich and coffee shop, and some lecture halls.

  University departments and academic buildings are clustered around 4 mini-campuses. These mini-campuses each have a cafeteria and with the exception of the new Mechanical Engineering campus, are all within walking distance of each other. All university buildings are  located near a tram line.

  Student residence halls are run by the "Studentenwerk", and are located in the neighborhoods adjacent to the university. About 2400 students live in the residence halls, all in single rooms. 

  As an alternative, many students live in single apartments, or share a larger apartment with friends. Exchange students usually live in one of the residence halls but if they prefer, they can sublet a room in an apartment instead. The International Office can help them arrange this.
