The American University in Bulgaria (AUBG) offers liberal arts education taught entirely in English. AUBG is a multicultural institution and provides an unrivaled cultural experience. 40% percent of the student body is non-Bulgarian and comes from over 35 countries!

Founded in 1991, following the fall of communist governments across Eastern Europe, the American University in Bulgaria was established in order to educate future leaders committed to serving the needs of the region by promoting the values of an open democratic society. Now, 30 years later, the university has become one of the most prestigious educational institutions in the region with a cozy residential campus, the award-winning student center America for Bulgaria, and one of the largest English-language libraries on the Balkans.

AUBG’s hometown, Blagoevgrad, is undoubtedly a university town — 20,000 of its 80,000 residents are students! Blagoevgrad is a vibrant cultural center boasting of a restored old quarter, quaint shopping plazas and dynamic clubs and cafes. It is famous for its architecture and welcoming atmosphere, and the surrounding region abounds with natural beauty and tourist attractions such as the Rila Monastery, the Bankso ski resort, the spa town of Sandanski and the Seven Lakes of the Rila Mountain. Bulgaria’s capital, Sofia, is only an hour away! Sofia offers access to cities all over Europe, Istanbul and Greece via plane, train or bus.

At AUBG, students pursue their interests by participating in one or more of our 40+ student clubs. Clubs include a student musical that tours around Bulgaria, a Model European Union, a student radio on campus, our very own Olympics, an international business conference, a programming hackathon, and much more! There’s something for everyone’s taste at AUBG!
