Founded in 1967, the University of South Carolina Upstate is one of the nation’s top public regional universities. What began as a commitment to helping the state avoid a nursing shortage has matured into a more than $500 million annual impact on South Carolina.

Located along the I-85 corridor in Spartanburg between Greenville and Charlotte, N.C., USC Upstate is ranked by U.S. News & World Report among the Top Public Schools in the South. We are a major producer of talent for the region, boasting more than 6,000 students, 1,300 new graduates per year, and about 30,000 alumni, many of whom live and work in South Carolina.

USC Upstate is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) and is one of four universities within the University of South Carolina System. We have more than 50 undergraduate and graduate programs in the liberal arts and sciences, business administration, nursing, and education, as well as 15 NCAA Division I sports teams.

Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Spartanburg is known as “Hub City” for its location between multiple major city centers including Charlotte, North Carolina and Atlanta, Georgia. The Upstate region, where Spartanburg is located, is one of the fastest growing regions in the country and is home to over 450 international businesses including the largest BMW manufacturing plant in the world. The city of Spartanburg has seen rapid development which mirrors the regions growth.

Spartanburg enjoys all four seasons with mild winters that may only see snow once or twice a year. The spring and fall offer warm days with cool nights. Summer provides as much sun as you could want with heat to match. Nothing beats our warm summer evenings! Looking for some relief from the high temperatures? A quick drive north into the mountains provides some amazing hiking opportunities in the cooler mountain air. The Atlantic Ocean is accessible by car and is most easily accessed by visiting the global city of Charleston, South Carolina.

International students are welcome to join our more than 70 student organizations which range in interest including academic, sports, religion, hobbies, and more! Our NCAA Division I athletic events are all free for students and happen during both the fall and spring semesters. Athletic and exercise facilities are available for use free of charge and intramural sports are available including e-sports.
