Emporia is 50 miles southwest of Topeka, the state capital. Emporia lies between three metropolitan areas: Kansas City, Topeka and Wichita. The city of Emporia offers a unique sense of community for international students. Local residents make a special effort to help students feel at home and the city can be easily explored walking, biking or using local transportation. The downtown area is a short distance from campus and Kansas offers plenty of opportunity for outdoor activities.
Emporia State University has over 100 Recognized Student Organizations that all students may participate in. Some of our more popular clubs and organizations among international students are the Muslim Student Association, the Korean Student Association, the Chinese Student Association, the International Club and the Japanese Student Association (Sakura).
During school and holiday breaks (Labor Day, Fall Break, Thanksgiving, Spring Break, etc.), the Office of International Education plans a variety of events for students who are unable to get away for the break. Excursions to Kansas City for shopping, concerts or a rodeo usually cost US$30-50; other on-campus activities such as our Holiday Tea, dances, movies, karaoke contest, sports days and Thanksgiving dinner are hosted at no cost to the student.
