Roanoke’s suburban city, Salem (population 26,000), was recently rated as the #1 Virginia city to live in and ranked one of the safest cities in the state of Virginia. The city of Roanoke (metro population 300,000) offers an array of museums, art galleries, professional theater and concerts, and great shopping centers. The city of Roanoke is a diverse community with over 70 nationalities represented. The Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport (13 km from campus) offers daily direct flights and an Amtrak train station is within 15 minutes of campus. Washington, D.C., the nation’s bustling capital, is a quick 3 ½ hour drive north of campus.
Students become leaders at Roanoke by taking advantage of over 140 student clubs and organizations, 26 men's and women’s varsity sports (Division III), and a vibrant fine arts program. With guaranteed housing in 27 on-campus residence halls, Roanoke allows international students to stay in college housing over the breaks or to stay with a “friendship family.” Roanoke offers living-learning communities dedicated to students beyond the binary (Mosaic House), first-generation students (RC Promise), international students (Global Village), and multicultural life (diverse racial and ethnic identities) to name a few. With a supportive International Student Support Office, an annual international festival, international craft events, international holiday celebrations, an international student club, a dedicated prayer/meditation room, and free transportation to nearby cities, Roanoke is a welcoming place for international students. The Cregger Athletic Center and the Colket Student Center offer modern facilities and a comprehensive fitness, intramural, and recreation program.
