Louisiana State University is the oldest and largest of Louisiana’s state universities and is also a research institution. It enrolls over 31,000 students at the graduate and undergraduate levels, with six percent of the students coming from outside the United States. LSU has excellent sports and performing arts facilities; a well-equipped student union is the center of student activities. Some 20 percent of students live on campus.

LSU is located on the southern edge of the city of Baton Rouge, bordering on the Mississippi River. Baton Rouge, the state capital, is a commercial and industrial center. With its distinctive cultural and architectural heritage, New Orleans is about 90 miles to the southeast.
