Montana State University was recently recognized by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as one of the top 96 research Universities in the United States and was ranked #5 on Outside Magazine’s list of "40 Best College Towns." MSU is a state institution enrolling over 15,000 students in degree programs through the doctoral level. Most students are state residents and there are approximately 700 foreign students. About 25 percent of students live on campus. Sports, including skiing and horseback riding, play an important part in the extracurricular life of students. The Museum of the Rockies features western and American Indian art and artifacts, an extensive paleontology collection and a planetarium.

    The campus is nestled in the Rocky Mountains, affording opportunities for outdoor sports such as backpacking, fishing, skiing and rock climbing. Yellowstone National Park is 90 miles away, offering spectacular geothermal features, hiking and camping. Bozeman is a young, vibrant community that hosts an annual film festival, a symphony and many community events throughout the year.

    There are over 100 student clubs and organizations at MSU including academic, honorary, recreational, religious, special interest, self-help, and sororities and fraternities. The Office of Student Engagement provides support to student organizations and plans fun events for students throughout the year such as Service Saturday, MSU International Food Bazaar, and MSU Debut.     Athletic facilities are available for use free of charge. A number of intramural and club sports are offered every semester and welcome international students.
