Western Washington University is recognized nationally for its successes, from its leadership as one of the most sustainable, “green” campuses in the nation by the Sierra Club to being named one of the healthiest schools in the country. Western was given the Community Engagement classification by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching for its efforts to operate community-outreach programs, deepen students’ civic and academic learning and to enhance overall community well-being. For the third straight year, Western ranked first in the nation in 2015 among medium-sized universities sending its graduates to the Peace Corps.

Western Washington University is located on a hillside, overlooking the city of Bellingham and many of Puget Sound's 172 San Juan Islands. The University is 50 miles south of Vancouver, British Columbia, 90 miles north of Seattle and an hour's drive from the popular ski area on 10,778-foot Mount Baker. The water and mountains of the Pacific Northwest are popular attractions, as are the nearby cultural centers of Seattle and Vancouver, British Columbia.

International students have many opportunities to participate in over 200 student clubs at Western Washington University. WWU Associated Students, an organization designed and run by Western students, seeks to ensure a fulfilling college and academic experience for all university students through the many services and programs it offers. The Outdoor Center, for example, provides a variety of outdoor-related opportunities and activities for all students. Emphasis is placed on developing and refining skills, responsible environmental practices, fostering diversity, enriching the academic experience and promoting life-long learning. Resources include a knowledgeable staff, equipment rentals, the bike shop, excursions, educational resources and instructional clinics. Athletic facilities are available for use free of charge to ISEP students.

In addition, WWU offers a special program for international students, called the International Buddies program. It matches each new international student with an American student. International Buddies are in communication with new international students before departure, and after arrival. Buddies offer friendship, social activities and advice on living in the Bellingham community.
