Southern Illinois University at Carbondale

Founded in 1869, SIU Carbondale is the flagship campus of the Southern Illinois University System.  It is a strong, diverse, student-centered research-intensive and comprehensive university that recently earned the prestigious 2015 community engagement classification from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. That designation reflects our longstanding commitment to service and outreach; in 2013 alone, 237,000 residents of central and southern Illinois benefited from 578 initiatives with more than 3,000 community partners. 

Total enrollment at SIUC is about 20,000 and of this number, about 15,000 are Illinois residents. About 1,500 students from 101 foreign countries are enrolled. About 23 percent of the students live on campus.

  SIUC is located in the foothills of the Ozarks, 100 miles southeast of St. Louis, Missouri. The climate is generally mild, with just enough snow for winter enjoyment. Surrounded by apple and peach orchards, lakes and state parks, the city of Carbondale offers shopping, restaurants and other facilities.

  The SIUC facilities include a multi-purpose recreation center with pool, indoor track, weight rooms, racquetball courts, stadium and arena, a lake, the Coal Extraction and Utilization Research Center (one of the nation’s leading centers for coal studies), and the Morris Library, which includes special collections on American and British expatriate literature, press freedom, proletariat theater, the Irish literary renaissance, John Dewey and Ulysses S. Grant. The Saluki Shuttle Transit System provides local transportation.
