Our new community was created at the beginning of 2019, when the University of Tampere (UTA) and Tampere University of Technology (TUT) were merged to establish the new foundation-based Tampere University that will maintain close ties with Tampere University of Applied Sciences (TAMK). The new Tampere University is one of the most multidisciplinary universities in Finland. Our new community will bring together research and education, for example, in the fields of technology, health and society.

Almost all internationally recognised fields of study are represented at our university. Our research groups and projects conduct multidisciplinary research across institutional boundaries. The research undertaken at our Centres of Excellences (CoE) ranges from game culture studies to tumour genetics.

Our new brand is encapsulated by the slogan Human Potential Unlimited. To learn more, please see the About us page.

    Tampere, Finland Campus Website

Tampere University is situated in the city of Tampere - voted best place to live in Finland

Tampere is Finland’s third largest city and it has been voted as the most popular place to live in Finland several times. It is a very student-oriented city, with approximately 40,000 of its 232,000 inhabitants being students. Here, in the Sauna Capital of the World, you will find over 20 public saunas in the region for anyone to relax in, throughout the year, and the only Moomin Museum in the world is located right next to city centre campus.

To learn more, please see the Visit Tampere page.

Tampere University is among the top universities in the world

World university rankings recognise the top 1-3 % of the approximately 20,000 universities in the world. The most popular rankings include 200-500 universities, usually chosen by their number of publications and/or references. Tampere University is among these elite institutions (Times Higher Education ranking in 2019: 201-250th). The Finnish education system as a whole is highly esteemed around the world. In 2018, Finland was ranked 6th in the Universitas21 ranking for national systems of higher education, which evaluates national systems rather than individual universities.

Tampere University offers an inspiring environment to develop your skills

Our academic approach puts you at the center of your own learning process. Rather than requiring you to absorb information, we value you as a contributor to our academic community and expect you to actively participate in classes. We want you yourself to discover the central point in the issues you are studying, to bring your own perspective into discussions, to question what you learn, and to build a convincing argument. At Tampere University you are given a lot of freedom to plan and carry out your studies. You can, for example, include courses from other degree programmes and other campuses (The Cross Campus Study Service), which allows you to adapt your studies to your needs and expand your knowledge. Tampere University has very modern facilities to support your studies including IT services, libraries, SportUni sports centers and campus restaurants offering quality food at affordable student prices.

For more information, please see the Study with us page.

Tampere University offers you friendly student-teacher relationships

We're not so big on titles or hierarchies in Finland. In fact, it is likely that you will be on a first-name basis with your professor, and may have an informal discussion with a vice-president in one of the university's many events. Our teachers, researchers and professors are approachable and eager to share their knowledge and help you find your strengths.

The study groups in our international programmes are usually small, which allows our professors and other staff to get to know you personally. Our current and previous international students are very satisfied with how approachable our staff are.

And finally, Finland is one of the best countries in the world

Finland is a safe country where technology and innovation are highly prized - Finnish companies and individuals use digital resources and mobile technologies at rates among the highest in the world. At the same time, nature is always close by and the conserving the environment is another core value. Finns are strong believers in equality and education.

Finland’s commitments to its values, its citizens and its institutions have led to its predominance in many international rankings (2016-2018), among them that Finland is the most stable nation in the world (Fragile States Index); the freest nation in the world (Freedom House); the safest country in the world (World Economic Forum); the happiest country in the world (Sustainable Development Solutions Network); one of the most innovating countries in the world (Global Competitiveness Report, World Economic Forum); first in human wellbeing (Sustainable Society Index); first in environmental performance (Environmental Performance Index, Yale University); one of the least corrupted countries in the world (Corruption Perceptions Index, Transparency International); one of the most equal countries in the world (Global Gender Gap Index, World Economic Forum) and has best basic education in the world (Global Competitiveness Report, World Economic Forum) among many other accolades.
