The University of Eastern Finland was established on January 1, 2010, as a result of the merger of the University of Joensuu (founded in 1969) and the University of Kuopio (founded in 1972), which were both ISEP member institutions. With its approximately 16,000 students, the University of Eastern Finland is one of the largest universities in Finland.
The University of Eastern Finland, Joensuu is a renowned center for research and teaching relating to education and human development, forests and the environment, optics, new materials and information technology, and on border studies and Russia. Facilities include the Ecological Research Institute; Karelian Institute, focusing on the humanities and social sciences; and the Muikku Research Vessel, which specializes in environmental studies in inland waters. The university library features the Kalevala Collection, comprising about 600 works on the Finnish national epic.
The services of the Learning Center, Computing Center, University Library, Student Union, Student Health Care Center and sports facilities are available to students on campus or nearby.
The University of Eastern Finland, Kuopio specializes in teaching and research in health care and environmental sciences, as well as associated biosciences, biotechnologies, information technology and business administration.

In addition to negotiating better rights and benefits to students, the student Union also arranges a lot of social activities and events around campuses.
KISA is an official association of the student union of the University of Eastern Finland, functioning in the Kuopio campus. KISA is both for international students staying in Finland and Finnish students interested in internationalisation. The purpose of the association is to organize events for international and Finnish students and act as a link between them. Every semester KISA organises trips to places including Lapland, St. Petersburg and Stockholm. In Kuopio, KISA organises events such as international food festivals, game nights, country presentations, sauna evenings and other parties.

The beautiful scenery and the unspoilt lakes and rivers offer almost endless possibilities for sports and recreation. Indeed, Joensuu is home to approximately one hundred different sports clubs. The city's vivid selection of theatre and music, on the other hand, constitutes excellent food for the soul. The Joensuu Campus is compact, easy to access and accessible. The campus is home to nearly 8,000 degree students, so be prepared for a lively atmosphere and corridors filled with happy chatter. The campus is located right by the city centre, making it easy to pop out to run errands even during the day. In Joensuu, many services for students ranging from student health care to services offered by the Student Union are available right on campus. The Joensuu Campus boasts excellent facilities for independent study, and the many cafeterias and campus restaurants offer lunch and snacks to be enjoyed in the midst of studying.

The international student’s association in the student union, ESN Joensuu, brings Finnish and international students together in Joensuu. The purpose of the section is to promote an international atmosphere on campus through organising different activities and campaigns together with the international students. Every year the ESN Joensuu organises events such as welcoming parties, a Halloween party, Pub nights, Finnish Link and many trips trips to places including Lapland, St. Petersburg and Stockholm.
