Al Akhawayn University is an ideal location for students who want an introduction to the region. The university is coeducational, residential and primarily undergraduate, with rapidly growing graduate programs. The outlook is international and tolerance is promoted and expected of students, staff and faculty belonging to many nationalities that live and work together.

Academic life is rigorous but highly personalized, and the student to full-time faculty ratio is 14:1. All faculty members have offices and maintain a minimum of nine office hours per week for easy access by students. Because the average class size is 17, students have ample opportunity to question, respond and interact with professors and classmates. Most of the nearly 2,040 students are enrolled full-time and live on campus. About 1,845 students are undergraduates and 194 are graduates. The student population is approximately 50 percent female and 50 percent male.

Founded in 1993 by Royal Dahir, Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane is a Moroccan public university accredited by the government of the Kingdom of Morocco following the vision of His Late Majesty Hassan II. Al Akhawayn is also accredited in the United States by the New England Commission of Higher Education.

Morocco is an open country in which a diverse set of faiths are welcome. The Interfaith Office supports a wide range of activities and events for members of the AUI community to learn more about each other's faiths. Many conservative values are evident; however, due to the history of Morocco, visitors are welcome and their respect for local customs is appreciated.

The resort town of Ifrane, nestled in the Middle Atlas Mountains at 1600 meters, has a regular population of 12,000 that expands to nearly 100,000 on weekends, holidays and during the summer because of its beauty in all four seasons. The Province of Ifrane is home to the largest cedar forest in North Africa and is the most biologically diverse area in Morocco. Two ski slopes are about 25 minutes from campus. The imperial cities of Meknes and Fez are an hour from Ifrane. The capital city of Rabat on the Atlantic coast is two hours from Ifrane, and the Sahara desert is six hours away.

There are over 40 students clubs and associations on this fully residential campus.

All students are eligible to play in the intramural teams of basketball, volleyball, soccer (football), rugby and others depending on student interest. Al Akhawayn University plays in the university leagues and there are official men’s and women’s teams in football (soccer), basketball, volleyball, handball, tennis, cross country and chess.

There are small grants for students of considerable athletic talent to play on certain university teams. These grants are open to visiting international students. Students can be directed to contact the athletic director after they are placed at AUI.
