Originally founded in 1622, Universitat Salzburg was reconstituted and now comprises four schools: Arts and Humanities; Divinity; Law; and Natural Sciences and is the biggest institution of higher learning in Salzburg. The university occupies several buildings all over Salzburg. In the Altstadt (old city), former parts of the Residenz Palace, the Toskanatrakt and in the Kapitelgasse now house university meeting rooms. The University library is between the Kollegienkirche (the University church) and the Festival Halls, attached to it is the “Große Aula”, or ceremonial hall. Arts and music are taught separately at the Mozarteum Art University. The total enrollment at Universität Salzburg is 11,000 students.

    Salzburg, Austria

Salzburg is the fourth-largest city in Austria and the capital of the federal state of Salzburg. Salzburg's "Old Town" (Altstadt) with its world famous baroque architecture is one of the best-preserved city centres north of the Alps, and was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. The city is noted for its Alpine setting. It is the birthplace of 18th-century composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. In the mid-20th century, the city was the setting for parts of the musical and film The Sound of Music, which also features famous landmarks in Austria. With three universities, Salzburg is filled with the liveliness of a large student population. Public transportation is excellent. From Salzburg, you can easily reach the mountains, meadows and lakes of the Austrian Alps, see the Blue Danube, drift through the old world charms of Budapest or cross the Alps into the medieval villages and gentle hills of Northern Italy.

The international office sponsors regularly scheduled meetings for exchange students and their “buddies” at an International Stammtisch. Excursions are offered for a nominal fee to sites such as the National Park, breweries or the opera.
