The University of Iowa (UI) enrolls 21,500 undergraduate and 9,000 graduate and professional students. Foreign students are ten percent of the student body. About 55 percent of the students are Iowa residents. Approximately 20 percent of the students live on campus.
The Iowa Writer’s Workshop for creative writing has a worldwide reputation, and the International Writing Program which convenes each fall semester have helped designated Iowa City as a UNESCO "City of Literature. Several arts facilities suffered major damage during a flood in 2008 and are currently being rebuilt. The Iowa Memorial Union is the center of student activity, incorporating student services, shops, lounges, and cafes. A variety of sports facilities are available, including a new Campus Recreation & Wellness Center, boasting 20,000 square feet of fitness space over three levels.
