UIU is a private, liberal arts university which was started in 1857 by a pioneer woman named Elizabeth Alexander and her husband, Robert. UIU was originally called the “Fayette Seminary of the Upper Iowa Conference” but was changed to Upper Iowa University in 1858. The Peacock became UIU’s mascot around 1890 and is still the mascot today. UIU offers more than 40 majors, master's degrees, bachelor's degrees, associate degrees and undergraduate certificates in a variety of specialties. UIU is fully accredited with more than 150 years of experience providing quality education.

Fayette is home to Klock's Island Camping Park and Rainbow Land Park, Cardinal Sports Complex, Multi-Use Trails, Big Rock Golf Course and the Volga River Lake State Park. While the Volga River winds its way through town providing unlimited recreational opportunities, the 5,000 acre Volga River Lake State Park offers fishing, canoeing, sailing, hiking and cross country skiing. Seasons change with the splash and splendor of color. Fayette is the best of what nature and people have to offer.
Students can participate in in a variety of activities. Some of activities offered in the past have included trips to Minneapolis and Chicago, trips to professional sports games, concerts and shows, International Culture Night, a film festival, and various volunteer opportunities. International students may also join the International Student Association, a Greek fraternity or sorority, a club or organization, play intramurals and more.
