Originally founded as a private university in 1886, UTC merged with the University of Tennessee in 1969, and is a primary campus of this public institution. Approximately 8,700 students represent 45 states and 53 foreign countries. UTC has excellent educational facilities including the fine arts center, Lupton Library, DeSales Harrison Racquet Center, a 12,000-seat arena, and a new engineering, mathematics and computer science building that houses modern, state-of-the-art engineering laboratories.

UTC’s Southeast center for education in the arts, the Challenger space center, and the computational simulation and design center and SimCenter are all noteworthy. UTC also has a distinguished faculty with chairs of excellence in management and technology, humanities, applied mathematics, communications, rehabilitation technology, business leadership, entrepreneurship, business, Judaic studies and arts education.

    Chattanooga is located in the southeastern United States. It is an area of great beauty, as well as geological and historic interest. It lies in a valley surrounded by mountains and the Tennessee River. Chattanooga is in the midst of the Tennessee technology corridor and at the northern terminus of a developing economic corridor that extends southward to Atlanta. The university is located only a few blocks from downtown Chattanooga and is easily accessible by public transportation.

    A moderate yet varied climate encourages a variety of outdoor activities such as camping, sailing on area lakes and white water rafting. The cultural environment of Chattanooga is enhanced by contributions from the university such as the fine arts series, as well as by the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera, the Hunter Museum of Art, the Chattanooga Little Theatre and the downtown nightfall series, a popular concert series. Metropolitan Chattanooga is centrally located within 150 miles of the larger cities of Atlanta and Nashville.
