As the westernmost institution in the University of North Carolina system, WCU provides comprehensive educational opportunities to residents in the state’s western region and attracts students from around the globe to explore the region’s vast natural diversity. Founded in 1889 as a teaching college, WCU offers a broad array of undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The student body includes about 9,000 full-time students. The student-faculty ratio is about 20:1.
The academic programs span more than 115 undergraduate specialties and more than 60 graduate programs, including the highly-ranked entrepreneurship and project management programs, a national award-winning teacher education program, a criminal justice program used as a model for North Carolina’s accreditation program and the nation’s first accredited four-year emergency medical care program. Our distinguished faculty includes national award-winning authors, nationally and internationally recognized experts and winners of Emmy, O. Henry and National Endowment for the Arts awards — to name a few.

Located between the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains, in the southern Appalachian mountain chain, WCU's main campus in Cullowhee consists of about 265 acres, surrounded by beautiful woodlands in close proximity to the Blue Ridge Parkway, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Cherokee Indian Reservation and is conveniently located between the cities of Atlanta and Asheville. Opportunities abound to experience southern Appalachian culture through regional events, including music and art festivals held throughout the year.
With more than 150 student organizations on campus, international students are very involved in planning and participating in many campus events, recreational activities, and excursions to nearby cities like Asheville and Atlanta. Activities include the Study Abroad Fair and International Education Week every fall semester, the WCU International Festival every spring semester, participation in Last Minute Productions- the student-run organization that brings entertainment venues to WCU, as well as activities with Base Camp Cullowhee, a joint student and faculty organization that provides outdoor recreation trips, outdoor equipment rental, and experiential education services with special emphasis on access to recreational activities in the region including whitewater rafting, kayaking, alpine skiing, hiking, cycling, and rock climbing.
