In the Monteverde Interdisciplinary Program students experience the natural splendor of Costa Rica, from marine to cloud forest ecosystems, and are exposed to the exciting culture of a safe, stable and democratic country in Central America. The program includes field trips to national parks, beautiful beaches and sites of cultural interest.

The Henxrix College in Costa Rica program provides students with an academically vigorous summer study opportunity in Latin America where they will earn six U.S. credits over the course of the six-week program.

Students live and study at Ecolodge San Luis in the heart of the beautiful Tilarán mountain range, minutes from the cloud forest and a few hours from the beach. The cabins are relatively new, and include bunk-style rooms with indoor bathrooms and hot showers. The Ecolodge has a full-serve kitchen, where local women and men prepare three hearty meals a day, much of which comes from locally grown food. The meals are vegetarian and vegan friendly.

The mountain town of Santa Elena is 20 minutes away and has grocery stores, restaurants and a pharmacy.

Course Description

Students will take two courses:

PHYS 100: Astronomy Under Costa Rican Skies (Taught in English)

This course offers students the opportunity to study the structure and evolution of the universe under the skies of Costa Rica. The latitude of Costa Rica offers observers a chance to see stars and galaxies not visible from most sites in the northern hemisphere. Showpieces of the southern sky include the Southern Cross, Eta Carinae Nebula, Omega Centauri, 47 Tucanae and the Magellanic Clouds. Emphasis will be on students making their own observations and learning how humans derive understanding from those observations.

LITR 390: Literature and the Jungle (Taught in English) OR

SPAN 390: Literature and the Jungle (Taught in Spanish)

This course focuses on short literary works from Latin America that talk of the interaction between humans and their natural environment. Texts from important authors, ranging from historical texts to short stories to poetry, will be studied to discern how people have adapted to living in tropical climates like Costa Rica.

For students taking SPAN 390 there is a prerequisite of the equivalent of SPAN 210 or 220, or the consent of the instructor. For students taking LITR 390 there are no prerequisites.
