LIVE and DINE
Connect with local students while staying in a single room in a college dormitory complete with access to a shared kitchen and hall bathroom. Alternatively, opt for a single room in an international house located on the outskirts of campus featuring an en-suite kitchen and half bathroom, with shared laundry and shower facilities. While on campus, sample Japanese food (with some Western options) in the dining hall. Enjoy the convenience of markets and restaurants within walking distance of campus and explore Okinawan delicacies like goya champuru (a mix of goya, tofu, pork, eggs, salt and soy sauce) and inamuduchi (a celebratory miso soup).
EXPERIENCE
Known as the “Hawaii of Japan,” Okinawa’s distinctive culture is a unique blend of influences from China, Oceania, and Southeast Asia. In Nishihara, relax in the laid-back, tropical atmosphere surrounded by white sand beaches and emerald-blue water. Immerse in the local culture by visiting Shuri-jo (former castle of the Ryukyuan monarchy), bustling Kokusai Street (the city’s main street with shops, cafes, and bars), and multiple local festivals, like the Naha Hari Festival, a celebration of dragon boat racing that attracts over 100,000 spectators. Venture further into the community in Sakurazaka, a nearby LGBTQ+ friendly area home to bars, clubs, and restaurants.
What We Love About Okinawa
We love that Okinawa offers a unique, tropical experience with unmatched opportunities to take coursework focusing on indigenous history and Japanese culture.
