UJ offers programs in nine faculties: art design and architecture, education, economics and financial sciences, engineering and built environment, health sciences (closed to ISEP students), humanities, law, management and science. UJ has many strong areas of academic excellence in all faculties. Areas of academic interest for study abroad student may include Africa diplomacy and international relations, political studies, management and accountancy, physics, entrepreneurship development, visual identities in art and design, education rights and transformation. 

Course Description

The University of Johannesburg operates on a Southern Hemisphere academic schedule. When researching courses, students may see "A" courses and "B" courses. "A" courses are offered from January to June, and "B" courses are offered from July to November.

Special Application Instructions

All students applying to study at the University of Johannesburg must complete the supplemental University of Johannesburg study abroad application in addition to their ISEP application.  Students should fill out the application to the best of their ability and attached the application to the "additional information" portion of their ISEP application. 

All non-native English speakers must provide TOEFL/IELTS scores or a language proficiency report.

Other Academic Conditions

Graduate students with the relevant qualifications and prerequisites are allowed into most graduate programs at UJ. Health Sciences are not open to any ISEP students. 

All students going to the University of Johannesburg must also purchase South African medical aid on arrival in the amount of approximately $200 USD for the semester. 

PASSPORT: All students must have a valid passport to participate in this program. If you do not have a valid passport, we suggest you start the application process as soon as possible. 


VISA/RESIDENCE PERMIT: Most students attending this program will be required to obtain a visa/residence permit. For more information on the process and estimated cost, please review the ISEP Country Handbook here.
