PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
• Immerse yourself in the breathtaking scenery of South Africa. Keep an eye out for the Big Five (elephants, lions, rhinos, leopards, and buffalo) that can be seen in local national parks and game lodges. Other iconic African wildlife like hippos, giraffes, cheetahs, and whales can also be spotted during your time abroad!
• The vibrant University of Johannesburg offers an extensive range of classes for students, making it a great choice for students with broad interests or for those with specific class needs.
• When you arrive, you will be whisked away from the airport to your new home by your on-campus contacts. To kick off your adventure, participate in a weeklong orientation that includes a city tour, workshops, and several excursions to local attractions like the Lion & Safari Park.
• Discover the fascinating cultures and traditions of the people of Africa by visiting the nearby Lesedi Cultural Village, a world heritage site within the Cradle of Humankind. While there, check out the Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve, which runs a breeding program for endangered species including Bengal Tigers, Siberian Tigers, and the extremely rare White lion.
LIFE ABROAD
Johannesburg (or Jo’burg or Jozi as it is lovingly referred to) is the ideal place to study abroad for a big-city experience paired with opportunities for outdoor adventures. In the city, have access to shopping, dining, nightlife, and world-class museums, including those that offer deep insight into South Africa's past (such as the Apartheid Museum). Outside of the city, explore a traditional village for a glimpse into local customs, or venture to a nature reserve for extraordinary natural landscapes and wildlife.
LIVE
Enjoy a single room in the on-campus residence hall which includes full furnishings, a fully equipped kitchen, and a bathroom. Laundry facilities are available on the premises or nearby. Braai (barbeque) facilities and recreation centers are available to encourage social integration with your peers on campus.
DINE
On campus, you will find restaurants, coffee shops, cafeterias, and grocery stores for all your dining needs. Enjoy South African cuisine which is derived from the culinary traditions of its diverse population. Traditional foods include bunny chow (curry in a half-loaf of bread), samp (corn) and beans, bobotie (a curried mince dish of Malay origin), milk tart, koeksusters (sweet syrupy deep-fried twisted pastries) and biltong (salty dried meat). We recommend budgeting approximately $200 per month for meals.
EXPERIENCE
There are many opportunities for international students to participate in extracurricular activities in one or more of the over 100 student clubs and societies. These cover a variety of topics including gaming, religion, sports, community service, and more. A popular experience is joining the UJ choir, which offers a fantastic opportunity to see the country and participate in campus life.

Johannesburg’s location makes it ideal to enjoy a wide range of outdoor activities including visits to any of the country’s seven World Heritage Sites: The Cradle of Humankind, The Greater St Lucia Wetland Park, Robben Island, Ukhahlamba/Drakensberg Park, Mapungubwe, Richtersveld Cultural and Botanical Landscape, and the Cape Floral Kingdom.

Course Description
Vibrant University of Johannesburg offers an extensive range of classes (modules) for students, making it a great choice if students are looking for a diverse class list. Noted for its strengths in science, technology, engineering and math, it is also a great option for STEM students. The chart below reflects some of the more popular classes (modules) students have taken in the past to help get you started.
Credits Earned
Programs of Study are called “Courses” and Classes are called “Modules”. Students who complete the program in good standing can expect to earn 72 NQF credits which ISEP recommends is the equivalent of 16 U.S. Credit Hours.

Other Academic Conditions
Each class (module) is generally worth 18, 24 or 36 NQF credits. Students may take up to a maximum of 4 modules per semester.
Students should plan to commit 12-24 hours per module per week committed to the class (lecture, homework, readings, etc) for a 15-week semester. 1 NQF represents 10 hours of classwork for the semester.
University of Johannesburg follows the Southern Hemisphere calendar. When searching for courses, be sure to search for courses using the correct parameters: First Semester (1A) is February to June; Second Semester (1B) is July to December.
If you are considering studying for a full-year in South Africa, you should consider starting your program at the beginning of UJ’s academic year in February.
Graduate students with the relevant qualifications and prerequisites are allowed into most graduate programs at UJ. Health Sciences are not open to any ISEP students.
All students going to the University of Johannesburg must also purchase South African medical aid on arrival in the amount of approximately $200 USD for the semester.
