Start your day with a provided daily breakfast, a welcome lunch, and some meals during weekend program excursions. For lunch and dinner, enjoy easy access to local markets, food stalls, and highly affordable restaurants and cafes within walking distance. Discover Roma’s hip food scene, with options ranging from vegan tacos to traditional favorites like tacos al pastor, nopales (cactus), barbacoa, esquites, and tlacoyos—corn masa dough stuffed with delicious fillings.
EXPERIENCE
Settle into the neighborhood with a guided walking tour of charming La Condesa. Explore more of the region with day trips to the Mesoamerican pyramids of Teotihuacan, Plaza de las Tres Culturas, the Basilica of Santa María de Guadalupe, and the canals of the Xochimilco borough. For those interested in a longer guided excursion, take the overnight weekend trip to Puebla with a visit to the Great Pyramid of Cholula. Closer to campus, dive into Mexican culture with cooking classes and a salsa dancing lesson!

Navigate the area using the metro, with the city center just 30 minutes away. Discover why Mexico City is renowned for its museums, including the Museo Nacional de Antropología, the Frida Kahlo Museum, and the Museo Nacional de Arte. For a taste of local life, visit the Escandon Market near your hotel every Tuesday, or explore the various markets available weekly throughout the city. Many other sightseeing destinations are within a three-hour bus ride!

Access the campus medical center as needed, with an English-speaking doctor on call 24/7, in addition to the on-campus counseling center, Centro de Impulso y Vista Estudiantil. Campus facilities include a gym, swimming pool, and basketball courts.

Course Description
The program includes 40.5 total hours of instruction, generally equivalent to 3 U.S. credits.
Course Content
- 3 hours of Introductory Spanish
- 1.5 hr. lecture: Overview of the History of Mexico
- 36 hours of undergraduate level classes and co-curricular site visits focusing on Public Health in the Mexican context.
Topics to be covered in lectures:
• Introduction to health care in Mexico
• Cultural attitudes and beliefs in relation to health care
• Mexicans with physical disabilities: overview of current situation
• The politics of nutrition and food in Mexico
• Health care for the elderly in Mexico
• STD/HIV issues in Mexico
• Mexico’s approach to global health issues
• Child health care issues in Mexico
• Mental health issues in Mexico
• Environmental issues relating to health care
• Sociocultural aspects of sexuality in Mexico
• Health issues in vulnerable populations
Site visits to hospitals and social and health organizations include:
• Community healthcare center
• Children’s physical rehab center (CRIT)
• Public healthcare facilities: rural hospital and urban clinic
• Public elder care residence
• HIV clinic
