Through TU Dortmund University's cooperation with area schools we are able to organize full-time English-language teaching internships in a variety of subjects (grades K-12). Credit is earned through TU Dortmund University. This program is a great opportunity for students to earn contact hours for Student Teaching requirements; students can earn 15 U.S. credits by teaching for a minimum of 3 months for 30-40 hours per week.

The schools with which we work are dedicated to building lasting relationships in order to share their experiences and knowledge with future educators. Past interns have even been hired on as full-time teachers after graduation.

As an intern, you will be enrolled as a student at TU Dortmund University and will have access to all of the services available in the ISEP Exchange, including:

- Access to a free 4-week German Intensive Course (September or March)

- Free "NRW Ticket", a public transportation ticket for the entire state of North Rhine-Westphalia

- Access to all courses (language or academics) at TU Dortmund University

- Assignment to an academic adviser on campus

- Assignment to a student mentor in the "Dortmund Doubles" program

- Dorm room assignment

- Assistance with all logistics (such as the visa appointment in Dortmund, etc.)

Please note that the Ruhr Area is a large metropolitan area - you will have to commute 30-60 minutes by train to your internship, just as the locals do! Your enrollment in the program, however, entitles you to a free transportation pass during the regular semester dates (October-March or April-September). If you arrive before the regular semester starts, you will need to pay for your own transportation.

HOUSING

Students live in single rooms in dormitories run by Studierendenwerk Dortmund. Rooms may be in shared flats or single apartments. Students will apply for housing through the TU Dortmund International Office, and rent will be paid on behalf of ISEP students. Please note that students will commute approximately 45 minutes between their dormitory and the internship site.

MEALS

ISEP students will receive a meal stipend based on the cost of living for students in Dortmund, which they can use to purchase groceries and cook meals in shared facilities, as well as use in campus cafeterias (Mensa). All students will be expected to budget for their meals accordingly, and can ask their ISEP Student Services Coordinator for tips, as well as check out ISEP's resources for Budgeting for Study Abroad

SCHOLARSHIP

This program qualifies for the ISEP French and German Language Annette Kade Fund Scholarship. The scholarship awards $500 - $1,500 USD to students who are from a U.S. institution and studying French or German language in Austria, France, Germany, Reunion Island, or Switzerland. Learn more here!

Course Description

The host school is dedicated to promoting inquiry-based learning and the educational approaches offered by SBW Haus des Lernens and the International Baccalaureate.

Your progress and experiences will continually be discussed with the school and your academic adviser at TU Dortmund University. An accompanying seminar helps you to reflect on your experiences and learn more about the educational system in Europe.

Subjects: You may apply for an internship in any teaching subjects at any level K-12, however students with the following IB DP subjects (grades 11-12) are especially encouraged to send applications:  Biology, Math, Chemistry, History, Geography, English, Spanish, German, Business Management.

Internship Duration:  Ideally 3 months for Secondary Years, longer for Early/Primary Years. Start and end dates are flexible and do not have to match Dortmund's regular semester dates. We do, however, reccommend that interns first participate in the 4-week Intensive German Language Course before starting the internship. In order to receive minimum credits for the internship, students must participate for at least 3 months.

Available Programs: Interns at all grade levels are invited to participate in in-house professional development events and take part in collaborative planning meetings when possible. The teachers also share their insight into lesson and unit planning and give interns real-life experience in teaching.

- Primary Years (ages 3-11): Interns would join the international team of educators in the Primary Years Program, which is one of the most renowned educational programs in the world. Interns would assist Homeroom Teachers and take part in the daily routines of the youngest students. Interns would be given valuable insight into lesson planning and would learn about the school's approaches - inquiry cycles, Units of Inquiry, etc.

- Secondary Years (ages 12-18): Interns would join the experienced team of international educators and learn more about the Cambridge IGCSE program - the most popular international qualification for 14- to 16-year-olds, as well as the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program, a prestigious pre-university program recognized by leading universities world-wide. Along with these international programs, interns would learn about the unique SBW approaches developed by the parent company in Switzerland - autonomous learning, coaching and compacting lessons. Interns would assist SY teachers in their daily tasks and would actively participate in lessons, autonomous learning periods, etc.
