The CzechMates program is centered on holistically developing student competencies related to critical thinking, international communication, intercultural collaboration, and practical work experience through a three-week, 3-credit course. Utilizing directed engagements with the Czech and Central European cultural context (visiting Prague, Bratislava, Vienna, Budapest, Brno, Telč and Southern Moravia), students will explore the Local as a context for understanding the Global, considering how their own culture, media, and means for communication (language, technology, symbolism, etc.) frame and connect their knowledge and personal experience of the world to broader understandings of their identity and perspective in the world. The three week Summer Experience focuses on the Globalization, Culture, and Communication course that prepares students to pursue a mentored internship for the remainder of the summer.

A range of unique and compelling mentored internship opportunities are offered each summer, ranging from local companies to multinational corporations and extending across a range of disciplines (Journalism, Advertising, Public Relations, Social Justice, Art, Graphic Design, Sports, Public Policy, Environmental Sustainability, Scientific Communication, Information Technology, etc.). Please see the list of Program Partners for further information about available internships.

These internships are selective because they are tailored to the students’ particular interests. Specifically designed to provide practical, engaged work experiences and measurable outcomes, these internships are determined and arranged in conjunction with the program director after interview and assessing each student with regard to their motivation, professional intentions, skillsets and interpersonal capabilities.

Please note that housing is only offered for the coursework portion of the program (June - mid July). Housing is available at low cost to students through Masaryk University for the internship period; ISEP students will be guided in finding housing in the student dorms upon request.

Some meals are included in the coursework portion of the program; no meals are included for the internship period.

I don’t think I ever formally thanked you (Professor Elavsky) for everything you did for me and how you changed my life in Europe. It has broadened my scope in so many parts of my life and made me a better person. It was an experience I will remember forever because of the friends I made, places I saw, adventures we went on, but most of all because of the wonderful person you are and what you did with that program in terms of getting us to think about the world and our place in it more broadly. There is not a better person in the world to be able to lead that program and I am so fortunate to be able to have gone through college when it became available.

- Drew Gallagher, The Pennsylvania State University, Summer Participant
The CzechMates program is a unique and specialized opportunity that allows students to truly immerse themselves in beautifully strange country and culture. The classes are intriguing, the community is supportive, but it is the internship that really sets this program apart from every other study abroad experience.

Students are placed in real-world workplaces where lessons in the classroom materialize into concrete deliverables. Language skills, teamwork, adaptability, and drive are all fostered in the CzechMates program.

I would not change this experience for anything. In only 12 weeks, I have made life-long friends, developed strong mentorships, produced and anchored the news, and challenged myself every single day. The CzechMates program is a must!
