Study in Kuala Lumpur (in English)
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
• Explore a campus situated amid durian, rambutan, and dragon fruit orchards and lily-filled lakes. In the city of Kuala Lumpur, you will discover a melting pot of distinct cultures with approximately half of the population identifying as ethnically Malay coupled with a blend of Chinese, Indian, and indigenous peoples.
• UPM, an AACSB-accredited leading research university, has attracted students and staff from all around the world, making it a well-respected global institution. Some highlights include their engineering, information technology, and nursing programs among many other fields.
• The on-campus International Students Association offers an extensive list of social programs throughout the academic year. Attending these events gives you an excellent opportunity to mingle with fellow students and visit some of Malaysia's most popular heritage and tourism attractions. These visits are partially subsidized by the university to provide all international students with the opportunity to participate.
• The campus is filled with compelling recreational activities for you to take part in while abroad. For example, you can put your equestrian skills to the test by riding horses at the on-campus equine center or learn how to hit a hole-in-one at the on-campus 18-hole golf course.
LIFE ABROAD
The laid-back, friendly people of Malaysia love to socialize and will welcome you to their country with open arms! This is due, in part, to Malaysia’s rich tapestry of diverse cultures, peoples, and ideologies who accept each other and live together harmoniously.
LIVE
Pick out your own housing on this program and find the perfect place to call your home away from home! You will receive assistance and recommendations from previous students and from your host university to help with choosing your residence. There are plenty of options available for a variety of different price ranges based on the location and size of the accommodation. Students are often surprised by how low living expenses in Malaysia are, so this is a great program for a budget-conscious student. We recommend budgeting approximately 1,500 USD for a semester’s worth of accommodation.
DINE
The variety of cultures in Malaysia means that you will have access to a large assortment of delicious food from around the world. There are more than 10 cafeterias scattered across the UPM campus, offering a variety of food choices with reasonable prices. Students can choose to indulge in a unique range of delicacies which include kampung, Western, and Middle Eastern cuisines. Common local dishes to enjoy are Nasi Lemak (coconut milk rice), Roti Canai (flatbread, sometimes with a filling), Hainanese Chicken Rice (chicken with chili seasoned rice), and Char Kway Teow (stir-fried flat rice noodles).
EXPERIENCE
In Kuala Lumpur, explore the city by taking the free bus ride around town, shop at Bukit Bintang (the shopping and entertainment district of Kuala Lumpur), and enjoy a free performance at the Central Market (Pasar Seni) in the evening. On campus, check out the massive green space called Expo Hill (or Bukit Expo) where you can partake in a picnic, rent a kayak or bike, run the jogging track, or even go fishing!
EXPLORE
Malaysia is made up of pristine beaches, breathtaking islands, an astonishing collection of flora and fauna, lush nature reserves, and a delightful array of mouth-watering cuisines. In Kuala Lumpur, hang out poolside at one of the many spots to take a dip. Or take a stroll through the Perdana Botanical Gardens Lake Gardens and get to know the over 3,000 birds (bird shows and feedings can be viewed daily!). For even more greenery, check out the Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (FRIM) for nature trails and a popular canopy walkway. If you are inclined to explore a more distant destination, travel to nearby islands, nature reserves, or the popular Penang National Park and Turtle Sanctuary. The best ways to travel are by bus, train, taxi, or boat. If your destination is further away, choose a budget airline (AirAsia, voted the world’s best low-cost airline, is the most popular and Kuala Lumpur International Airport is its main hub).
THRIVE
The campus offers students opportunities to enjoy an array of world-class sports facilities. These include a fully equipped gym, a sports hall, an outdoor swimming pool, a football pitch, an Astroturf pitch for hockey, an 18-hole professional golf course (which students get to use for free!), tennis courts, and a flood-lit athletics and football stadium. You will also have access to a 7km jogging track that runs through an orchard, which is difficult to resist for those keen to start or continue a healthy lifestyle!
What We Love About Kuala Lumpur
We love that throughout the year there are many festivals celebrated by the different cultures in Malaysia including religious holidays for Muslims, Buddhists, and more. These include celebrations such as the Moon Festival (also known as the Lantern Festival), Floria (a night parade featuring flower displays), film festivals, and many, many more!
