PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Universitat Pompeu Fabra offers the Barcelona International Summer School (BISS) as a flagship program to advance the curriculum of both domestic and international undergraduate students during the summer term in Barcelona. The BISS builds on UPF's academic strengths, engaging leading faculty members to feature and share their current research with participating students. Courses are interdisciplinary in nature, approaching social and scientific challenges from content, methodological and practical perspectives.

Besides the out-of-class, faculty guided activities related to each of the courses, UPF has developed a program of orientation and cultural activities that allows participants to get to know each other and immerse themselves in the culture of Barcelona and Catalunya. ISEP's programs in Barcelona also offer benefits above and beyond a typical ISEP program, including a dedicated onsite resident director.

HOUSING

During their time in Barcelona ISEP students will live in a student residence located within walking distance to the UPF campus, and close to both the beach and the city center. Rooms are double-occupancy and cooking facilities are provided.

Meal benefits are not included in this program. Students will be expected to use their own funds for meals and budget accordingly. Students can  ask their ISEP Student Services Coordinator for tips, as well as check out ISEP's resources for Budgeting for Study Abroad.

Course Description

Courses are offered in English or Spanish in an international classroom environment, and are structured in modules of different duration and intensity which can be flexibly combined in periods ranging from one to four weeks. ISEP students may enroll in a four-week course, or may enroll in any combination of the two-week and one-week courses during their month in Barcelona. All courses take place during the month of July.

Course content is organized around the following thematic topics: Art and Culture; Economy and Innovation; Global Cities; Justice and Rights; Media and Social Dialogue; Methods and Data; Mind, Life and Environment; Practical Thinking; Social Analysis.  Independent research projects along these lines can be also supervised by UPF scholars in the BISS summer term.

All courses are credit-bearing. Four-week courses grant 6 ECTS; two-week courses grant 4 ECTS; one-week courses grant 2 ECTS.

The BISS program also includes a month-long Spanish language course, offered at the beginner, intermediate or advanced level.

Students can view the Summer 2020 course descriptions and detailed syllabi at the link below.
