Summer in Seoul - Science and Engineering (in English) - ISEP Direct
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
· Study at Hanyang University, South Korea's top Engineering school, and take advantage of the campus’ location in the heart Seoul. Explore neighborhoods that never sleep, shop at vibrant markets, and visit nearby parks and temples in your leisure time.
· Select one to three courses in science and engineering and earn up to up to 9 U.S. credits. Subjects include standard mathematics and computing classes, as well as unique courses in emerging topics such as Mobile App Programming and AI Ethics and Society.
· Spend your 4-week summer session connecting with Korean culture beyond the classroom through coordinated excursions and activities offered through Hanyang, along with personalized recommendations from ISEP’s local coordinator, Brian Min.

Live in Seoul, a city that runs on momentum — café-lined streets, neon nights, and a subway system that makes it easy to bounce between neighborhoods. With campus in the middle of it all, you can keep your weekdays focused and still have plenty of room for spontaneous plans.
Experience & Cultural Engagement
Once you arrive, you’ll attend an opening ceremony where you’ll meet the Hanyang Global Lions (HYG) -- local students who lead orientation and act as guides, mentors, friends, and Korean language partners to international students on campus. Throughout the program, HYG will help you connect with other students and plug into campus life along the way.
Use campus resources to stay grounded throughout the program, from optional one-on-one Korean tutoring through the Center for International Education to mental health services through the Counseling Program. You will also have additional local support from ISEP’s coordinator, Brian Min, who can share recommendations and practical guidance for ISEP students during your time in Seoul.
Be sure to sign up directly with HYU for either one overnight excursion or one all-day tour package, included in the cost of your program – options have limited space and are filled on a first-come first serve basis. Excursion options change each year, and past options have included overnight trips cities that show you a different side of South Korea -- like, Busan, Sokcho, and Jeonju -- and full day tour packages to popular amusement parks and summer festivals outside of Seoul.
Live & Dine
Live on campus in a residence hall where you’ll share a double room and a private bathroom with one other student. Enjoy access to common areas, laundry facilities, study spaces, and a gym conveniently located on the ground floor. Plan to bring or buy your own bed linens, pillows, and cutlery for personal use — but no need for pots and pans, as cooking is not allowed in the dorms. Instead, you’ll rotate between campus cafeterias and nearby neighborhood eateries, making it easy to try Seoul favorites like bibimbap, tteokbokki, and Korean barbecue between classes and late-night outings.
Explore Seoul
Familiarize yourself with Seoul’s calm and creative side by gallery-hopping in Samcheong-dong, catching sunset views at Namsan Tower, or relaxing at one of the city’s many jjimjilbangs, a unique Korean spa. When you are ready to jump back into action, join program excursions or travel independently by KTX, bus, or short flights to explore more of South Korea or nearby Asian hubs such as Tokyo, Bangkok, and Manila.
South Korea Program Advisor
Brian (Kyung Hwan) Min, ISEP’s Seoul-based Regional Coordinator for Asia, provides extra support for ISEP students in Seoul and holds ISEP student meet-up events two to three times a semester. Past examples of events he has held include stamp-making and leather case-making, temple food tasting, and a K-pop dancing session. Brian has an academic background in Psychology (BA), Women’s and Gender Studies (BA), and Higher Education and Student Affairs (MA). After studying in the US, Brian returned to Korea in 2015 and served in the Air Force. He has also worked in intercultural education, tourism, online teaching, and entrepreneurship (start-up). Brian is passionate about student success and fostering an inclusive and safe environment.

Course Description
Hanyang University is ranked as the top Engineering school in South Korea. As such, they have a wide variety of English-taught courses in Engineering, Math, and Science.
Students who complete the program in good standing can expect to earn 3-9 credits which ISEP recommends is the equivalent of 3-9 U.S. Credit Hours. Academic courses are 3 credits with 45 contact hours, elective courses are 1 credit with 15 contact hours, and research projects are 3 credits with +60 contact hours. Students can take up to three courses.
Please note that if you use financial aid, you may be required to earn 6 US credits to be eligible for summer aid. Please speak with a qualified financial aid advisor to understand your eligibility and the requirements for using financial aid.
