Students on the Japan studies program will experience and learn about Japan first hand through daily immersion in social, cultural and school life here in Tokyo International University. The course offers intensive Japanese Language courses from beginner level to advanced level, and a wide range of elective courses for a well-rounded understanding of Japan and the Japanese language.

Students attending JSP on Exchange during the Northern Hemisphere academic calendar, full year (August - June) will not receive housing benefits in between semesters. Students attending JSP on Exchange during TIU's academic year (February - December) are provided an on or off campus dormitory. Students on Direct are not provided housing during vacation.

Course Description

Japanese language courses are a required part of the JSP curriculum, and are taught in Japanese. Students can take between 4-8 credits based on their language level.

All electives are taught in English. Elective options include Japanese Culture, Japanese Sociology, Japanese Politics, Japanese Literature and so forth.

Students are also able to enroll in courses offered by our E-Track program. This includes courses from International Relations and Business Economics.

In order to process your application further at TIU, it is necessary that you complete our internal program application for Japan Studies Program (JSP). Please submit the following forms within three weeks after you receive a notice about your placement from ISEP.


(1) JSP Online Application Form

- Access the website
- Scroll down to (3) Application and find  "1) Application Form (Online)" and complete the online form.

(2) Medical History Form

- Access the website
- Scroll down to (3) Application and find "6) Medical History (PDF)" and click "Medical History" to get the form. Please fill out the form and submit to the International Exchange Office via e-mail at   

Other Academic Conditions

Students must have the equivalent of a 2.5 GPA out of 4.0. If you are unsure of how your transcript translates to a 4.0 GPA, please contact your home ISEP Coordinator or Student Advisor for advice.

PASSPORT: All students must have a valid passport to participate in this program. If you do not have a valid passport, we suggest you start the application process as soon as possible.

VISA/RESIDENCE PERMIT: Most students attending this program will be required to obtain a visa/residence permit. For more information on the process and estimated cost, please review the ISEP Country Handbook here.
