The Almería province, which receives the most sunshine and least rainfall in all of Europe, has beautiful beaches, natural parks and an array of interesting villages to visit!

During this four-week program students improve their Spanish through a combination of classroom instruction and excursions throughout southern Spain that include trips to the Alhambra in Granada, Cabo de Gata Natural Park, and historic and cultural landmarks throughout Almería. In addition to daily classes, these trips count toward students' total credit hours.

Students further the immersion experience by living with an assigned local homestay family during their time in Almería. Host families provide students with 21 meals per week for the duration of the program.

Course Description

Students receive three hours of instruction, five days a week, and will participate in practical lessons outside the classroom for a total of 120 instructional hours and 12 ECTS credits (6 U.S. credits).

Students will be required to enroll in two mandatory courses: Spanish language and Spanish oral and written skills. Students will also be able to enroll in one of the following elective courses:

-Spanish literature

-Spanish language and culture through cinema

-Spanish history and culture

Please note that students should be at the intermediate/advanced level to take the Spanish literature elective.

The program will be offered at three different levels of language instruction: basic, intermediate and advanced. Students will be placed in the appropriate level after completing a language assessment on site. The host institution ultimately determines your proficiency level and course eligibility
