PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

• Settle into Almería, a sun-soaked coastal city in southern Spain where easy access to beautiful Mediterranean beaches, natural parks, and coastal villages, shape your scenic and outdoorsy summer.

• Improve your Spanish speaking and comprehension skills by taking an immersive language course matched to your level, as well as a Spanish culture and cinema course taught in entirely Spanish for a total of 6 U.S. credits.

• Follow a 4-week long program intentionally designed for Spanish language acquisition, with built-in cultural integration and included trips such as Granada and Cabo de Gata Natural Park.

LIFE ABROAD

Embrace the culture of Almería, where bright sun, coastal breezes, and an easygoing pace create the backdrop for your experience, making it easier to focus on language immersion without the intensity of Spain’s biggest cities. With North African and Arab influences woven into the region’s culture, this is a summer that feels distinctly Andalusian, and deeply local.

Experience & Cultural Engagement

Settle into a steady routine of Spanish language instruction and cultural coursework, with placement based on a language exam so you’re matched to the right level. Your learning stays grounded in place, with coursework designed to help you build confidence speaking Spanish while engaging with local and regional culture. The program also supports cultural immersion through coordinated excursions integrated into your studies that give you a fuller picture of Andalus. Examples of past excursions include a tapas route, historic and cultural visits to landmarks throughout Almería, and trips to the Alhambra in Granada and Cabo de Gata Natural Park. With a fixed course plan and planned included excursions, you can focus less on scheduling, and more on showing up consistently — in class, around town, and during program outings.

Live & Dine

Live in the air-conditioned Civitas student residence hall, located just 6 kilometers (about 3.7 miles) from campus, and commute by bus using your university-issued transportation card. Share a double room and bathroom with one other student, and enjoy access to a gym, study rooms, laundry facilities, and game rooms with TVs and ping pong.

You’ll receive three included meals a day Monday through Friday, at least one meal on weekends — breakfast on Saturdays and dinner on Sundays — and if a cultural visit overlaps with a scheduled meal, the tour company will provide a picnic in place of that meal. The residence hall also has a communal kitchen that you can use to cook any additional meals, or you can opt to try local specialties like delicious seafood paella at nearby eateries.

Explore Southern Spain

Using your down time to enjoy Almería means spending days at beaches with crystal clear water, evenings strolling La Rambla, browsing the Central Market, and joining local celebrations like La Virgen del Carmen to marvel at the decorated boats and nighttime fireworks. When you want to explore beyond Almería, other cities in southern Spain — like  Granada, Málaga, and Ronda — are all reachable by bus, and Almería’s airport primarily connects to major Spanish hubs like Madrid, Barcelona, Sevilla, and Melilla, along with seasonal European routes to the UK and Germany

What We Love About This Program

We love that you’ll learn Spanish while living in an underrated, beautiful corner of southern Spain. Almería feels calmer and is less expensive than nearby hubs like Málaga but still delivers some of the most stunning beaches in the country, making it easier to stay immersed, and enjoy your summer.
