Universitat Rovira I Virgili is located in Tarragona, a city in the Catalonia region of northern Spain. The coastal city of Tarragona is known as the “city of eternal spring” and is a UNESCO world heritage site, due to the ancient Roman ruins throughout the area. The mild climate is ideal for enjoying the region’s beautiful beaches and natural landscapes, while only a short train ride away students can access all that the vibrant city of Barcelona has to offer.

Universitat Rovira I Virgili is a comprehensive, research-oriented university committed both to the progress of the region and fostering global citizenship. The university has three campuses in Tarragona: Catalunya campus, Sescelades campus and Bellissens campus. ISEP students may take courses from any campus.

ISEP students immerse themselves in Spanish culture by taking university classes with local students and living in an apartment in the city or residence hall on campus. The university has an active student body, and ISEP students can participate in sports teams, cultural activities and student groups. ISEP students can also be matched with a local "buddy" to help adjust to life at URV and in Tarragona!

HOUSING AND MEALS

During the first month, all students stay at the on-campus residence. After the first month, students will receive a housing and meal stipend, and can choose to stay in the campus residence or find an apartment with other students. URV assists students in finding off-campus housing.

To receive their ISEP stipend students will open a local bank account on arrival. All ISEP students will be expected to budget their housing and meal stipend to pay rent and purchase groceries and meals. Students can ask their ISEP Student Services Coordinator for tips, as well as checking out ISEP's resources for Budgeting for Study Abroad.

Course Description

URV offers a variety of courses taught in Spanish and Catalan (the local language). A selection of courses are taught in English and Spanish in business, the STEM fields and literature. URV also offers Catalan language courses, as well as Spanish language courses for a small additional fee.

Other Academic Conditions

Language Requirements

All students must submit a Language Evaluation for Spanish with their ISEP application. The host institution ultimately determines your proficiency level.

Students taking all courses in English (usually only possible for business, chemistry or English language) must have an A2 level of Spanish.

Students taking some or all courses in Spanish must have at least a B1 level of Spanish.

A B2 level of Spanish is required for enrollment in the following academic areas: Hispanic Language and Literature, Publicity and Public Relations, Journalism and Audiovisual Communication.

Academic Requirements

Students must register for at least 60% of their courses within the same academic Faculty and degree program. The host institution ultimately determines your course eligibility.

Students taking all courses in English may have further restrictions to avoid scheduling conflicts and ensure they are enrolled in a full program of study. It is recommended that students pursuing all courses in English plan to take all of their classes in the same academic program, with the exception of any Spanish or Catalan as a second language courses.

Please note that courses are generally taught in only the first or second semester. Students should carefully review the course offer to ensure that they will be able to enroll in at least 24 ECS in their chosen field during the semester they plan to attend URV. Courses labeled "anual" are full year courses that are not open to semester students.

Students must register for a minimum of 24 ECTS and a maximum of 30 ECTS. 1 ECTS = 0.5 U.S. credits, so a 6 ECTS course in Spain is equivalent to a 3 credit course in the U.S. Your home university ultimately determines credit conversion.

Chemical engineering students must have junior level status and a 3.0 GPA equivalent.
