A short distance from the Atlantic coast, Nantes is known as the Venice of the West due to its location on the river delta of the Loire, the Erdre and the Sèvre. There is a very strong international presence in Nantes because of the many international students attracted by the University. Students can take courses taught in French at the University alongside local students, or they can take French language and culture courses at the university's Institut en Français Langue Étrangère (I-FLE) alongside fellow international students from around the world.

ISEP students live in a university residence hall and receive a meal stipend.

This program qualifies for the ISEP French and German Language Annette Kade Fund Scholarship. The scholarship awards $500 - $1,500 USD to students who are from a U.S. institution and studying French or German language in Austria, France, Germany, Reunion Island, or Switzerland. Learn more here!

Course Description

The French Language & Culture program through the I-FLE offers intensive French language courses during the semester or full year for international students who wish to improve their language skills and learn more about French culture. Courses are offered from the elementary (A1) level to the advanced level (C2), with each semester of coursework granting 30 ECTS. Students will take a placement test to determine their appropriate level of study.

To find more information about the courses offered at each French level and course descriptions, please see the Livret d'Accueil.

ECTS credits are not attributed on transcripts for the Language & Culture program  at Nantes, instead, credit hours of instruction are issued. Students who complete one semester in the Language & Culture program will receive a total of 216 hours of instruction.

To gain a full understanding of how Language & Culture programs work at ISEP, please review the ISEP Country Handbook for France here.
