Summer French Intensive & Recreation Program (FIR)

The Université de Savoie offers a six-week immersion experience (120 hours of instruction) in the town of Chambéry, a gateway city to the French Alps, with its pedestrian-friendly squares, historical town center, colorful cafe terraces and breath-taking views of the mountains. Through intensive, specialized classroom learning and leisure activities, you will make great progress in French, gain firsthand cultural experiences and explore the delights of the Savoie region.

Students will take courses at ACCENTS, part of the Université Savoie Mont-Blanc specialized in teaching French as a foreign language to students from non-Francophone countries. It is a medium-sized university (12,000 students) with three campuses and great facilities.

Trips and visits included in the program fee generally cover a welcome tour of Chambéry and Savoie, an excursion to Chamonix (Mont Blanc and its glaciers), and a farewell dinner cruise on nearby Lake Le Bourget.

Additionally, courses are organized so that students can participate in a number of complementary excursions organized by ACCENTS to regional places of interest including Chamonix. Recreational Activities are organized most afternoons, either for free or a small fee, and may include hiking, museums, mountain biking, swimming at the nearby lakes and sports.

Course Description

A typical program includes 20 hours per week of small-group instruction, at 6 different levels from beginner to advanced, and three workshops on aspects of local life (120 total hours of instruction, including lab; usually 5 – 6 US credits, depending on the home university’s transfer policy). Most afternoons include a comprehensive range of organized sport or leisure activities. Sample syllabi can be found below.
