PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

• Study in Kawagoe, a charming and traditional prefecture of Tokyo and an area known for its historic Edo period atmosphere and cultural richness.

• As the capital of the third largest economy in the world, Tokyo is an ideal location to take courses in English in business and international relations with other students from over 50 countries around the world.

• Join a campus group to connect with the local student community – from sports to a club devoted to eating Udon – there's a little something for everyone to enjoy at TIU!

• Enjoy the modern conveniences of Tokyo by taking a weekend trip to the countryside on a bullet train or digging into conveyor belt sushi with your new group of international friends.

LIFE ABROAD

Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo, the area around TIU is known for its boutiques, restaurants, and traditional craft stores located in 17-19th century buildings.

LIVE

Live in the TIU International House, an on-campus dormitory for international students. Enjoy amenities such as the modern shared kitchens, free laundry facilities, and access to dormitory managers and residential assistants on-site who can lend a hand during your assimilation into life in Japan.

DINE

Although a meal plan is not included in the program fee, there are many restaurants, supermarkets, and fast-food options in and around TIU for all of your dining needs. TIU also has several on-campus dining options, from cafeterias, to convenience stores, to food trucks. Enjoy access to Western style food like McDonalds or staple Japanese cuisine like miso soup and seafood – there are options to satisfy all your tastebuds.

EXPERIENCE

The English Plaza is an innovative and inviting space available for native English speakers and those who want to practice their English skills. The plaza offers amenities like tutoring services and meeting places, often used for students to connect with their teachers. A bonus is the Oregon Café, which offers a free cup of coffee, tea, or juice to every student who uses the plaza. This is a wonderful place to connect with other students or faculty, play games, grab a coffee, or work on homework in one of the available study rooms.

EXPLORE

Opportunities to explore Japan’s natural and small-town beauty are easily accessible by bullet train, including natural parklands, scenic lakes, hot springs, and theme parks. Just a 2-hour and 30-minute bus ride away (and for only 18 USD) is the start of the Yoshida Trail, the most popular route to hike on Mount Fuji. If you prefer to stay within Tokyo to explore, train lines will take you directly downtown for around 6 USD. As evening approaches, watch Tokyo come alive by visiting popular nightlife destinations such as Shibuya, a neighborhood full of karaoke bars, late-night eateries, and arcades that cater to the city’s night owls. For those wanting to experience the eclectic and youthful side of Tokyo, explore Harajuku, an area where you can find the latest in streetwear fashion as well as those dressed head to toe in elaborate cosplay.

THRIVE

For all of your mental health needs, there is an on-campus counseling service with two days per week of English language services. You will also have access to gyms for use between or after class or as a part of club activities.

What We Love About TIU

We love that there are approximately 1,300 international students at TIU each semester! To celebrate the truly global atmosphere of TIU and Tokyo, an International Festival is held each year for students to enjoy food, booths, and performances. The festival is a great opportunity to learn about other cultures and meet new friends in the process.
