PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

• Experience the world-renowned culture of Tokyo residing in a neighborhood situated in the heart of the city alongside local students.

• As the capital of the third largest economy in the world, Tokyo is an ideal location to take courses in English in business and international relations with other students from over 50 countries around the world.

• Join a campus group to connect with the local student community – from sports to a club devoted to eating Udon – there's a little something for everyone to enjoy at TIU!

• Enjoy the modern conveniences of Tokyo by taking a weekend trip to the countryside on a bullet train or digging into conveyor belt sushi with your new group of international friends.

LIFE ABROAD

Enjoy the dynamic energy of Tokyo while living in Ikebukuro, a neighborhood located in the heart of the city that offers quick access to public transportation, popular shopping centers, and delicious restaurants.

LIVE

Live in a single room in a suite-style apartment off-campus alongside local and other international students at TIU. Enjoy amenities such as a shared kitchen, few laundry facilities, and access to resident staff to help assimilate into life in Japan.

DINE

Although a meal plan is not included in the program fee, there are many restaurants, supermarkets, and fast-food options in and around TIU for all of your dining needs. TIU also has several on-campus dining options, from cafeterias, to convenience stores, to food trucks. Enjoy access to Western style food like McDonalds or staple Japanese cuisine like miso soup and seafood – there are options to satisfy all your tastebuds.

EXPERIENCE

The English Plaza is an innovative and inviting space available for native English speakers and those who want to practice their English skills. The plaza offers amenities like tutoring services and meeting places, often used for students to connect with their teachers. A bonus is the Oregon Café, which offers a free cup of coffee, tea, or juice to every student who uses the plaza. This is a wonderful place to connect with other students or faculty, play games, grab a coffee, or work on homework in one of the available study rooms.

EXPLORE

Opportunities to explore Japan’s natural and small-town beauty are easily accessible by bullet train, including natural parklands, scenic lakes, hot springs, and theme parks. Just a 2-hour and 30-minute bus ride away (and for only 18 USD) is the start of the Yoshida Trail, the most popular route to hike on Mount Fuji. As evening approaches, watch Tokyo come alive by visiting popular nightlife destinations such as Shibuya, a neighborhood full of karaoke bars, late-night eateries, and arcades that cater to the city’s night owls. For those wanting to experience the eclectic and youthful side of Tokyo, explore Harajuku, an area where you can find the latest in streetwear fashion as well as those dressed head to toe in elaborate cosplay.

THRIVE

For all of your mental health needs, there is an on-campus counseling service with two days per week of English language services. You will also have access to gyms for use between or after class or as a part of club activities.

What We Love About TIU

We love that there are approximately 1,300 international students at TIU each semester! To celebrate the truly global atmosphere of TIU and Tokyo, an International Festival is held each year for students to enjoy food, booths, and performances. The festival is a great opportunity to learn about other cultures and meet new friends in the process.

Other Academic Conditions

Students can choose from any of the classes offered in the 3 E-Track (English Track) programs: Business Economics, International Relations, Digital Business and Innovation. These classes will be in English. Students with JLPT N2 level or higher can also choose other program courses in Japanese. More information can be found on the TIU website.

Please use the link here to search for syllabi. Note that the website goes down for maintenance daily from between 2:00-5:00 JST. (You can convert this to your local time using this website.)

Students can also choose to take Japanese language classes through the Japanese Language Institute (JLI). The JLI has established tiered classes for TIU's Japanese language program to ensure that each student is enrolled in the level that is most suited to their individual needs. Currently, there are roughly 20 instructors within the JLI which allows TIU to maintain small classes and one-on-one tutoring if needed.

Graduate students cannot take undergraduate courses, and undergraduate students cannot take graduate courses.
