PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

• Spend your summer in the dynamic port city of Valparaíso, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its historic architecture, street art, and coastal setting.

• Earn up to 6 U.S. credits through Spanish-language coursework matched to your proficiency level. Gain unique insight into your host region and Chilean culture through PUCV’s Latin American Studies portfolio, with offerings available in both Spanish and English.

• Live with a Chilean host family for four weeks in Viña del Mar and practice Spanish beyond the classroom. Share meals, conversation, and daily routines that reinforce language learning through full cultural immersion.

LIFE ABROAD

Study in Valparaíso, a hillside port city overlooking the Pacific, where colorful neighborhoods, historic funiculars, and ocean views shape everyday life. Mornings in Spanish class give way to afternoons exploring open-air markets, visiting museums, or gathering with classmates along the coast.

Experience & Cultural Engagement

Spend four weeks building Spanish language skills through courses tailored to your proficiency level, with class discussions, presentations, and cultural analysis conducted entirely in Spanish. An included city tour introduces you to Valparaíso’s historic port, colorful hills, and artistic identity, giving context to the language you’re learning. Outside of class, connect further with Chilean culture through local activities such as visits to the Palacio Baburizza or enjoying a free classical music performance in Plaza Central.

Live & Dine

Live with a local Chilean host family in Viña del Mar, a breezy coastal city about 15-20 minutes from PUCV’s Casa Central campus by bus. Settle into your own room and make yourself at home with shared access to spaces like the kitchen, living room, and bathroom. With meals provided by your host-family, you’ll start each day with a typical breakfast, then enjoy home-cooked Chilean meals for lunch and dinner. Try flavorful meat or vegetable stews like cazuela and charquicán, or enjoy seafood dishes like ceviche that are particularly refreshing in warm weather.

Explore Chile

Weekends in Valparaíso provide plenty of time to explore seaside promenades and vibrant art districts. Venture beyond the city to discover Chile’s central coast with visits to Viña del Mar’s beaches, or travel to Santiago to enjoy museums, historic plazas, and views of the Andes.

What We Love About This Program

We love that this program combines focused Spanish study with daily cultural immersion in one of Latin America’s most visually and culturally distinctive cities — there’s plenty to do and see in Chile.
