Discover the heart of the Mediterranean Sea on the largest of the Maltese Islands. With over 7,000 years of history and culture, Malta is described as “one big open-air museum” because so much of its past is visible today. Visit the Megalithic Temples, which are the oldest free-standing structures in the world, or let your imagination wander as you consider whether Malta could truly be the location of the lost city of Atlantis. The Maltese have one of the highest standards of living in the Mediterranean and the official languages are Maltese and English, making conversations with locals both easy and interesting.

The University of Malta is located in the town of Msida, a suburb of Valletta, the capital city of the Republic of Malta. Established in 1592, the University of Malta is one of the oldest universities in Europe, and is Malta’s only university. The present campus opened in 1968 to provide more modern facilities, and the university seeks to carry out academic research and provide a vibrant higher education setting in the arts, sciences and humanities. Although Maltese is also an official language of the island, the language of instruction at the university is English.

ISEP students immerse themselves in Maltese culture by taking university classes with local students and living in the university's student residence. The university has an active student body, and ISEP students can participate in sports teams, cultural activities and student groups. The university also has a "buddy system" to connect ISEP students with local students and help adjust to life in Malta!

Other Academic Conditions

Students cannot leave the University of Malta before the final date of their semester exams. Fall semester exams take place from mid-January to early February and spring semester exams take place in June. It is not possible to take exams early or remotely. Leaving early may result in a failing exam grade and/or forfeit of credit.

Students will officially register for courses after arrival in Malta. Students will need to get in contact with the academic department administrator at the University of Malta in advance of departure to confirm that the courses desired are available, and obtain premission to register. Students may contact the host coordinator at Malta for assistance with this after ISEP confirmation.

In the Maltese academic system, 1 ECTS = 0.5 U.S. credits, so a 6 credit course in Malta is equivalent to a 3 credit course in the U.S. While Malta’s minimum enrollment is 8 ECTS, students should register for 24 – 30 ECTS to be considered full-time. Students must also check with their home university how ECTS are converted and how many courses they need to register for.

Malta’s academic calendar is organized on a full year basis, so students studying abroad for only one semester should be aware that course availability may be limited, requiring extra flexibility in course selection. Students are also encouraged to have additional courses in mind in case of scheduling conflicts.

The faculties of Health Sciences and Medicine & Surgery are closed to ISEP students.
