LIFE ABROAD
Uniquely situated along the Sha Tin Hoi cove, the Chinese University of Hong Kong boasts a vibrant, green campus with plenty of nearby hiking trails and stunning views of the local terrain. With nearly 20,000 students and proximity to the city, you can expect a dynamic blend of urban life’s amenities and natural beauty.
LIVE
Connect with students from all around the world while staying in one of nine residential “colleges,” each with its own dining halls and other communal facilities such as an open terrace, ocean-view gym, and piano room. Most rooms have stunning views of the sea or hillsides and are shared with 1-2 other roommates.
DINE
Explore over thirty canteens on campus, featuring various cuisines including Cantonese and Shanghainese, with vegetarian and Halal options available. In the city, students can enjoy dim sum—small steamed or fried dumplings typically enjoyed at brunch—egg tarts, pineapple buns, and the eclectic offerings available at cha chaan teng—a Hong Kong-style diner. For those who want the option to cook at home, shared kitchens with refrigerators, stoves, microwaves, and standard utensils are available in each residential college.
EXPERIENCE
Immersion into life in Hong Kong begins at orientation, when students will receive a guided tour of the city. Explore more of the region through coordinated excursions to places like Lantau Island—a nearby island with beaches, mountains, and monasteries. Excursions to the Tian Tan Buddha, or “The Big Buddha,” and the Tai O fishing village are also available. There is no shortage of cultural activities closer to campus; CUHK offers cooking classes, Kung Fu classes, Chinese calligraphy classes, museum visits, and more!
EXPLORE
The region is serviced by the MTR public transit network, providing easy access to the subway line to reach all districts, the airport, and mainland China. A metro card opens access to local activities including the Temple Street Night Market, Wan Chai Promenade, Disneyland Hong Kong, and local festivals. Hong Kong is also a great hub for travel to bucket list destinations in Asia; by ferry, students can visit the beaches at Sai kung East Country Park, Lantau Island, and Macau (the “Las Vegas of Asia”). Flights to Thailand, Singapore, and Malaysia are low-cost, and range from 3-4 hours!
THRIVE
Utilize campus amenities including the Multicultural Psychological Support Service—a mental health service for non-local students offered in nine languages. Maintain physical wellbeing with access to CUHK’s multiple sports facilities, three gyms, and an Olympic-sized swimming pool.

Course Description
Courses are available in the arts, business, engineering, sciences and social sciences fields. CUHK is particularly recommended for students interested in Asian, Chinese, and international studies. CUHK also offers many cultural activities including Tai Chi classes, field trips and part-time teaching opportunities.
CUHK teaches in three languages: English (E), Mandarin (P) and Cantonese (C). You can click the "Website for Course Availability" link for instructions on viewing CUHK's teaching timetable. Select Term 2 for classes starting in January.
Note language codes like "E#C," indicate classes taught in Cantonese that will switch to English for English speakers. Codes like "E&C" will be in a combination of both languages. E#C or E#P courses are fine for most English-speaking international students, while E&C and E&P courses are a great opportunity for fluent speakers of Mandarin or Cantonese use their language capabilities in a classroom environment.
Credits Earned
Students who complete the program in good standing can expect to earn 12-15 credits which ISEP recommends is the equivalent of 12-15 U.S. Credit Hours.

Academics
Other Academic Conditions
Currently, spaces in Business, Management, Finance, Marketing, Communication and Broadcasting courses taught in English are extremely limited. Students requesting courses in these departments must be flexible in their course requests. Students who need a full course load in these courses should consider other programs.
Medicine, Law, and Education courses are closed to exchange students. Click here for the list of courses not available for exchange or study-abroad students, and additional information for Law courses, undergraduate Business Administration courses, and students affiliated with S. H. Ho College.
At CUHK, undergraduate courses are coded 1 - 4 while postgraduate courses are coded 5 – 9.
The first numeral in the course code of undergraduate courses stands for the level of study. Typically courses in the 1000 level are lower division courses, while courses in the 3000 and 4000 levels are upper division courses. For courses in the 2000 level, the classification of division varies according to policies of individual departments, but they can generally be considered intermediate level.
Students need to take a language placement test if they want to enroll in a Chinese language course. This can be waived only if the student is planning to take an entry-level Chinese course. It’s highly encouraged for students take the placement test prior to arrival and registration. For subject/non-language courses taught in Putonghua (Mandarin), students who feel confident in their language skills can try to register.
