Though the official language of instruction is English, students from all over the world take advantage of this opportunity to learn Arabic, a critical language, in one of the most dynamic nations in the world.

Sharjah may not compete with the dazzle and glitz of Dubai, but the people’s sensitivity towards its history and culture explains why Unesco declared Sharjah the cultural capital of the Arab world. The endless arts areas, souqs and museums will keep you exploring for hours on end. Sharjah is also uniquely located on world trade routes is the only Emirate with direct access to the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman. Course Description

The American University of Sharjah in the Middle East is an independent, fully accredited institution serving a diverse student body from the region and around the world. Courses are taught in English giving students an opportunity to study in accredited programs like architecture (NAAB), business (AACSB), and engineering (ABET). Sharjah’s culture, firmly rooted in Islamic traditions, embraces courtesy and hospitality, making it a welcoming place to live and study.

Students on the Exchange and Direct program will be fully immersed in regular University courses taught in English in a variety of fields while taking an Arabic language course.

While students are allowed to take any offered courses, they are especially encouraged to take advantage of the numerous courses in Arabic language and literature, as well as Middle East culture, history and contemporary politics. AUS is a unique place to study Middle East culture which is why Exchange and Direct students are encouraged to look at Middle East studies courses that are spread across disciplines.  Unique course offerings include AACSB-accredited Islamic Finance, Islamic Art & Architecture (NAAB-accredited), Introduction to Islamic Philosophy, History of Material Culture in the Arabian Gulf Region, Chemical Engineering and Petroleum Engineering (ABET- accredited). Additionally, courses in Arabic translation, literature and poetry are offered in both Arabic (for native or native-level speakers) and English.

All university departments are open to incoming ISEP students, provided students have the appropriate prerequisites to register for courses, and provided there is space available.   Courses requiring labs (engineering) or studio (architecture, design) may have limited spaces for exchange students due to seating limitations.

Please check the Undergraduate/Graduate course catalog further information.

From the main website, choose ‘Academics and Research’ from the red navigation bar and choose ‘Registrar Services’. Click ‘University Catalogs’ to see the course catalog, and ‘Course Offerings’ to view the schedule for the upcoming semester as well as previous semesters. The quickest way to search for courses available in any given semester is to click here.

Please be aware that the Fall schedule of courses is typically uploaded to the Banner system in early March each year, and the Spring courses are typically uploaded in approximately mid-October each year.  If a student finds that courses for their study abroad semester are not yet uploaded, they can review prior Fall/Spring course schedules for a reasonable estimate of the courses that will be available in future Fall/Spring semesters (e.g. if studying abroad in Spring 2018, and the courses for Spring 2018 have not yet been uploaded to the Banner system, the student could check Spring 2017 for a close approximation of courses that will be offered in Spring 2018). Students can also look at the course catalog and Arabic courses offered regularly for information on courses offered.
