Study in Milan - Business & Social Sciences (in English, Italian)
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The historic city of Milan is located in the central Po valley, which is Italy's richest, most populated and most economically active region. Milan has always been forward-looking. During its 2,000-year history, it has been a driving force for great social, economic, cultural and political events. Milan is also a city of art, with a wealth of monuments, palaces, churches and museums, including the Duomo and La Scala, the temple of Opera. Milan is consistently ranked as the top student city in Italy by the QS Best Student Cities Ranking!.
Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, founded in 1921 by Father Agostino Gemelli, is one of the most comprehensive and complete higher education institutions in Italy. Università Cattolica excels in the diverse study opportunities that it offers in the humanities and sciences, and the university values and promotes an interdisciplinary approach. Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore is ranked as the 12th best university in Italy, and among the top 500 globally by QS World University Rankings.
The Academic Curriculum program is a great choice for students who have a background in Italian and want to be immersed in Italian culture, academics and daily life. This program consists of regular university courses at Università Cattolica, and the majority of your classmates will be other Italian students.
HOUSING
ISEP Students in Milan will be assigned accommodation by UCSC's housing partner, Milano International Living Service (MIL Service).
ISEP Exchange students will live in the Biccoca Social Campus Residence. ISEP students are accomodated in double-occupancy rooms in shared student apartments. The residence houses students, young professionals and families, all located on dedicated floors of the building.
ISEP Direct students will live in double-occupancy rooms in shared, fully furnished apartments in safe residential areas throughout the city of Milan.
Both accomodation types include free WiFi, all utilities, a fully furnished kitchen, and access to laundry facilities.
Students will commute from their apartments to the UCSC campus via public transportation. Commuting to work and school is part of daily life for residents of Milan, Italy's second-largest city. Students use Milan's robust public transportation system to navigate the city, and all student housing is strategically located near metro, tram and bus stops. Commute times vary depending on apartment location, but 30-40 minutes is considered average. Detailed information about how to navigate Milan's public transportation system will be provided both in advance of departure and in detail during students' onsite orientation.
MEALS
ISEP Exchange students receive a meal package that includes a specific combination of on-campus and off-campus meals. During the Welcome Orientation event ISEP Exchange students will receive a tailor made presentation on their meals benefits. Students receive a pre-loaded meal card that will allow them to enter the canteens at the university for 1 meal per day, and a pre-paid supermarket card that allows them to purchase groceries and organize the rest of their meals during the program.
ISEP Direct students do not receive meal benefits and will be expected to use their own funds for meals.
All ISEP students will be expected to budget for their meals accordingly, and can ask their ISEP Student Services Coordinator for tips, as well as check out ISEP's resources for Budgeting for Study Abroad.
Course Description
Most courses are taught in Italian, though there are some courses taught in English available in economics, finance, business management, international relations, political science and law.
To find courses, please carefully read this information from Università Cattolica about the Academic Curriculum, and follow the instructions on how to use the Course Catalog.
Academics
Other Academic Conditions
Università Cattolica offers both pre-session and in-session Italian language courses. Italian language courses are included in ISEP Direct program benefits, and available to ISEP Exchange students for an additional fee.
Please note that the academic calendar and semester dates for the Academic Curriculum program depend on the specific academic department. Students should carefully review the schedule for each department they wish to take courses in.
The Faculty of Economics and Management operates on a quarter system. Students who plan to take courses in this faculty during the spring (Janaury - July) semester, will have an earlier arrival date as Quarter II courses begin in early January. Students will be responsible for purchasing additional ISEP insurance (typically 1-2 additional months) to account for the early arrival and cover the entire period of their studies.
The Faculty of Law only offers year-long courses, and students only studying for a semester are generally not permitted to enroll in these courses.
In the Italian academic system, 1 CFU/ECTS = 0.5 U.S. credits. A 6 credit course in Italy is equivalent to a 3 credit course in the U.S. Students should register for a minimum of 24 CFUs/ECTS and a maximum of 30 CFUs/ECTS. Your home institution ultimately determines credit conversion.
