PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The historic city of Milan is located in the central Po valley, which is Italy's richest, most populated and most economically active region. Milan has always been forward-looking. During its 2,000-year history, it has been a driving force for great social, economic, cultural and political events. Milan is also a city of art, with a wealth of monuments, palaces, churches and museums, including the Duomo and La Scala, the temple of Opera. Milan is consistently ranked as the top student city in Italy by the QS Best Student Cities Ranking!

Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, founded in 1921 by Father Agostino Gemelli, is one of the most comprehensive and complete higher education institutions in Italy. Università Cattolica excels in the diverse study opportunities that it offers in the humanities and sciences, and the university values and promotes an interdisciplinary approach. Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore is ranked as the 12th best university in Italy, and among the top 500 globally by QS World University Rankings.

The Part-Time Internship Program allows students the opportunity to intern at a company in Milan, while also studying at Università Cattolica. ISEP students immerse themselves in Italian culture and daily life by taking courses at the university, interning with a local company and living in an apartment in the city. Please note that students participating in this program are responsible for paying an additional internship placement fee directly to UCSC (975 euros for ISEP Exchange students and 350 euros for ISEP Direct students). If UCSC is unable to find a placement, this internship placement fee will be retained by UCSC.

HOUSING

ISEP Students in Milan will be assigned accommodation by UCSC's housing partner, Milano International Living Service (MIL Service).

Most students choose to live in a shared student apartment. MIL Service apartments offer double rooms in fully furnished apartments, 24/7 high speed internet connection (WI-FI), iron and board, washing machine and a full kitchen with kitchenware.

ISEP Students also have the option through MIL Service to be accommodated on the international student floor of the Buonarroti Residence Hall. The Buonarroti dorm offers single rooms with private bathroom, wireless internet connections, utilities (water and electricity), a cleaning service, basic cable television, plus extra amenities such as a shared kitchen furnished with kitchenware. Students living in the dorm should be aware that there is a code of conduct that they will be expected to follow.

Commuting to work and school is part of daily life for residents of Milan, Italy's second-largest city. MIL Service housing is located in residential areas throughout the city, and while distances vary students should expect a minimum of a 20-30 minute daily commute, with the location of many apartments requiring a 40 minute commute to campus. Students use Milan's robust public transportation system to navigate the city, and all student housing is strategically located near metro, tram and bus stops. Information about how to reach campus and the best way to commute is provided to students during pre-departure and as part of the onsite orientation once in Milan.

MEALS

ISEP Exchange students receive a meal package that includes a specific combination of on-campus and off-campus meals. During the Welcome Orientation event ISEP Exchange students will receive a tailor made presentation on their meals benefits. Students receive a pre-loaded meal card that will allow them to enter the canteens at the university for 1 meal per day, and a pre-paid supermarket card that allows them to purchase groceries and organize the rest of their meals during the program.

ISEP Direct students do not receive meal benefits and will be expected to use their own funds for meals.

All ISEP students will be expected to budget for their meals accordingly, and can ask their ISEP Student Services Coordinator for tips, as well as check out ISEP's resources for Budgeting for Study Abroad

Other Academic Conditions

Students must be aware that over 90% of Italian businesses are small or medium – size enterprises, so placements in large multinational companies are limited. If students are offered an internship placement, it may be the only option available. It is therefore important that candidates understand the need to be flexible. However, UCSC will take great care in finding the best match. These are unpaid positions, but some companies may provide other types of benefits (not guaranteed).

Students must have junior or senior standing at their home institution to participate in the internship program.

Students should have an understanding of Italian, and enrollment in both Italian language courses is required.

Students must also submit the Internship Placement Application Form, a Resume and a Cover Letter to UCSC.

Additional Costs:

- Students are responsible for paying an internship placement fee directly to UCSC (975 euros for Exchange students and 350 euros for Direct students). If UCSC is unable to find a placement, the internship placement fee will be retained by UCSC.

- Enrollment in both Italian language courses is required. Università Cattolica offers both pre-session and in-session Italian language courses. Italian language courses are included in ISEP Direct program benefits, and available to ISEP Exchange students for an additional fee.
