PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
• From delicious street food, great beaches, and memorable historic sites, a summer in Ghana offers an experience like no other.
• Choose two classes taught by local faculty and earn 6 U.S. credits.
• Explore Ghana through unforgettable excursions including Cape Coast and Elmina Castles, Shai Hills, and the vibrant Ashanti Region, home to traditional crafts, historic landmarks, and West Africa’s largest market.
• Stay in on-campus housing in a residence shared by local and international students.
• ISEP Resident Director Theresa Kwakye can arrange service and volunteer projects and offers extra support and advice to students throughout the program.
LIFE ABROAD
Spend five weeks at Ghana’s top university exploring humanities and social science courses. If you are interested in learning about West African culture while enjoying a rich social experience in a local community, this program is for you!
Excursions & Cultural Experiences
Immerse yourself in Ghana’s rich history and culture with four incredible excursions included in the program. Participate in a guided tour of Accra, where you’ll explore the capital city and its unique landmarks. Learn about the profound history of the slave trade and Atlantic slave crossing during a powerful visit to Cape Coast. Explore Shai Hills, a historical and cultural park. Finally, embark on an overnight trip to the Ashanti Region, where you’ll visit the Manhyia Palace, engage with artisans in craft villages to learn traditional weaving techniques, and explore the bustling Kumasi Market—the largest in West Africa.
Service Learning
Deepen your immersion in the community by participating in a 3-credit co-curricular service-learning experience, including 30 hours of hands-on experience at a local Ghanian organization. The service-learning experience is part of the course, Strategies for Social Development with Field Practicum, and accompanied by 2 hours per week of class time to prepare for and discuss opportunities and challenges in the field. Housing & Meals
Live in an on-campus student hostel and connect with a global community of fellow international students. You’ll have a double room with amenities such as Wi-Fi, a desk and chair, access to shared laundry facilities and a kitchen, and a convenience store within the hostel. Step outside to lots of delicious dining options including street food, night markets, grocery stores, and restaurants.
Explore Accra
Located in Ghana’s capital city, Accra, The University of Ghana’s lush green campus is in the fastest growing city in Africa. Students will find a bustling city brimming with energy and creativity, including local markets, cuisine from around the globe, a quickly-evolving arts scene, historical sites, vibrant night life, and sunny beaches.

Course Description
Students will choose two of the three courses listed for a total of 6 U.S. credits. All courses are taught in English and designed specifically for ISEP students.
• HIST 315: History of the Black Diaspora (3 credits)
• ARCH 331: Art History of Ghana (3 credits)
• SOC: Strategies for Social Development with Field Practicum (3 credits)
Students select one of the following organizations as part of this class: The 4 organizations are:

Must be sophomore level or above. No course pre-requisites are necessary.
Students enrolling in SOC: Strategies for Social Development with Field Practicum should indicate which of the four volunteer organizations they wish to volunteer with when completing their ISEP course list after placement.
