• From delicious street food, great beaches, and memorable historic sites, a summer in Ghana offers an experience like no other.   

• Choose two classes taught by local faculty and earn 6 U.S. credits.  

• Learn about the history of the slave trade and Atlantic slave crossing during a visit to Cape Coast/Elmina Castles and Slave Dungeons, tour Shai Hills historical and cultural park, and join an overnight excursion to Ghana’s seat of Culture – the Ashanti Region. 

• Stay in on-campus housing in a single room in a building shared by local and international students.  

• ISEP Resident Director Theresa Kwakye can arrange service and volunteer projects and offers extra support and advice to students throughout the program.

Excursions & Cultural Experiences 

There will be 4 activities/excursions on this program: 

• Guided Accra city tour (day trip)  

• Cape Coast exploration of the history of the slave trade and Atlantic slave crossing (day trip) 

• Shai Hills historical and cultural park (day trip)  

• Ashanti Region visit and cultural exploration (overnight trip), including: 

◦ Manhyia Palace 

◦ Craft villages where you can learn to weave with Ghanaian artisans 

◦ Visit the largest market in West Africa in Kumasi  

◦ Hotel stay included

Service Learning 

Deepen your immersion in the community by participating in a 3-credit co-curricular service learning experience, including 30 hours a week of hands-on experience at a local Ghanian organization. The service learning experience is accompanied by 2 hours per week of class time to prepare for and discuss opportunities and challenges in the field.

Housing & Meals 

Students will stay in the International Student Hostel on campus. Each student will receive a single room. 

Students will have access to cooking facilities, grocery stores, street food, and restaurants. We recommend students bring $500 to pay for food while abroad.  

Explore Accra 

Located in Ghana’s capital city, Accra, The University of Ghana’s lush green campus is in the fastest growing city in Africa. Students will find a bustling city brimming with energy and creativity, including local markets, cuisine from around the globe, a quickly-evolving arts scene, historical sites, vibrant night life, and sunny beaches. 

Certain vaccinations are required to enter Ghana, including proof of COVID-19 vaccination as well as a negative test result for COVID-19 within 72 hours of departure to Ghana. 

Course Description

Students will choose two of the three courses listed for a total of 6 U.S. credits. All courses are taught in English. 

HIST 315: History of the Black Diaspora (3 credits)  

ARCH 331: Art History of Ghana (3 credits)  

SOC: Service Learning and Internship (3 credits)
