PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
• Embrace the pace of the laid-back, student friendly atmosphere of Hachioji City, while simultaneously having quick access to the electric energy of Tokyo.
• Take coursework primarily in Japanese, with select offerings in English in fields like business, law, and global studies at one of Japan’s oldest and most respected private universities.
• Immerse in Japanese culture while making connections on campus through local excursions organized by the dormitory and intercultural exchange events for international students.
LIVE + DINE
Settle into a furnished private room in a shared apartment with five other students—local or international—featuring a shared kitchen, dining area, and bathroom. Enjoy the comfort of a private space with air conditioning, a bed, closet, fridge, and TV hookup. Dine on campus with your monthly meal stipend, grab quick bites from nearby convenience stores, or shop for groceries just 15 minutes away. Be sure to sample Japanese favorites like kare raisu (curry rice), ramen, onigiri (rice balls), tonkatsu (fried pork cutlet), and yakisoba (fried noodles).
EXPERIENCE
Live in Hachioji, a student-friendly suburb on the western edge of Tokyo with easy access to the capital’s pop culture hubs like Shibuya, Harajuku, and Akihabara. Dive into the world of anime, manga, J-pop, and street fashion right where it all started. Join excursions organized by the dormitory to explore temples, museums, tea ceremonies, and other cultural sites across the Kanto region.

Academics
Other Academic Conditions
Students CANNOT return early from Fall semester and must stay through the end of January for exams. For this reason, it may be easiest for US students to study at Chuo either for a Full Year, or in the Spring.
For Japanese-taught coursework, Chuo recommends that students have passed Japanese Language Proficiency Test Level N3. This is required for students enrolling in Science and Engineering Faculty classes, which are located on the Korakuen, an hour away from ISEP student housing on the Tama campus.
For English-taught courses, no Japanese language is required, and no language proof is needed for the application process. However, if the student would like to take Japanese language courses (7 levels from beginner to advanced), students are required to learn Hiragana + Katakana (both writing & reading) in order to register for beginner class. Self-study is acceptable.
Japanese language courses for exchange students are typically offered 2 classes per week in 4 different levels (never studied before, beginner, intermediate, advanced). Academic courses are typically offered for 2 credits per semester, while language courses are typically offered for 1 credit per semester. Please note that students are required to take 6 classes per week as per Japanese visa requirements.
