Course Description

The University of Chester runs all of its undergraduate courses/modules via a full year delivery system, therefore it is recommended to apply for full year programs.

Chester offers a bespoke level five module worth 10 ECTs/4 credit hours: ML5108, “Intercultural Experiential Learning”. Along with this module/course the student will the take an additional four courses/modules totaling 20 ECTS in subjects of their choice. We offer a wide breadth of subjects you can study, so with that in mind it is essential that you mark key courses on your course request list along with this compulsory* module. This will facilitate your getting the best out of your exchange.

The foundation principles of the ML5108 are pedagogically based on aspects of Identity Psychology, Intercultural competence, History, Development, Politics  and International Relations . The principal purpose of this module is to encourage the student to reflect upon their personal experiences as a study abroad student and how these experiences impact the student’s perceptions of identity, culture and history. The course  will nurture a critical evaluation of the influence of relationships on the world stage and how diversity shapes society and the individual. This requires them to assess their own thoughts, actions and activities throughout their time at the University of Chester. In order to achieve this, the module will encompass: journaling for reflection; models of reflection and writing for reflection.  The module will also examine: experiential learning models; skills required for self-directed experiential learning; the psychology of culture shock; self-identity and intercultural awareness; cross-cultural issues and sensitivity.  The course help the student to focus upon their traveling experiences and turn them into constructive learning experiences. With this in mind there are  a number of  facilitated field trips and of course independent adventures, that the student can review systematically.

*students are opted in for ML5108 but may discuss dropping the module with exceptional circumstances.

Other Academic Conditions

TOEFL is not accepted for full year students. IELTS scores are required to study at Chester for the full year per immigration requirements. The University of Chester also accepts the following test scores:

-Cambridge B2: First Grade B

-Cambridge C1 Advanced: Any grade

-Cambridge C2 Proficiency: Any grade

Students are required to take the mandatory ML5108 “Intercultural Experiential Learning” module.

Although you will be able to choose from most modules running, please still choose alternatives as not all modules work together and some departments have caps on student numbers. This is particularly important as our modules are set up to work within the British system of a very subject focused degree throughout. So if you cross subject areas your classes may clash, so you will need to select back up modules. We will endeavour to help you create the best course for your time abroad.

- **Students are responsible for staying until the end of the semester and may not leave before the final date of their semester exams. Neither ISEP nor Chester can guarantee an early departure; leaving early may result in a failing exam grade and/or forfeit of credit.

PASSPORT: All students must have a valid passport to participate in this program. If you do not have a valid passport, we suggest you start the application process as soon as possible.

VISA/RESIDENCE PERMIT: All students, regardless of visa status will need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) prior to their program arrival date. Most students attending this program will be required to obtain a visa/residence permit prior to or upon arrival. For more information on the process and estimated cost of the ETA and visa/residence permit, please review the ISEP Country Handbook here.
