PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Founded in 1990, Universidad de Vigo is an innovative and modern public higher education institution, committed to the principles of equality, solidarity, democracy and liberty. It is especially well known for its academic excellence in the fields of science and technology. The university has three campuses located throughout Spain’s autonomous region of Galicia. Universidad de Vigo is a bilingual institution with Castellano (Spanish) and Gallego as the two official languages.

Vigo is the university’s flagship campus, housing the main administrative building as well as the central library and international office. Vigo has historically been an important seaport and fishing is one of the city’s main industries. The region also boasts beautiful beaches and delicious seafood.

Students will improve their Spanish through a combination of classroom instruction, cultural activities and excursions. Cultural activities and excursions include a city tour, a visit to a local winery, learning about mussel cultivation, a workshop on Galician food and a weekend trip to the Cies Islands. Students will also be introduced to the practice of teaching English as a foreign language, and will put these skills into practice as a language teaching assistant at local schools or language centers.

HOUSING AND MEALS

Students further the immersion experience by living with an assigned local homestay family during their time in Vigo. Host families provide students with 21 meals per week for the duration of the program.
