Nothing in the United States compares to the beauty of southeast Alaska with its lush temperate rainforest, snow-capped mountains, glacier fields and waterways. Add academic components such as innovative teaching styles, creative expression, undergraduate research, community engagement and outdoor classrooms, and you have the University of Alaska Southeast.

Notable programs such as marine biology, biology, environmental science and geography, outdoor studies and leadership, anthropology, political science’s legislative internship (spring only) and English offer students more than classroom lectures. These program offerings give in-depth meaning to theory by providing opportunities in the field, and unique self-exploration throughout. Small classroom size and one-on-one faculty-student interaction is the norm. Research opportunities are available, particularly in the fields of Marine Biology and Environmental Science.

There are few other U.S. sites that can offer this strong personal connection to the environment and unique, high-quality academics.

HOUSING

ISEP participants share a kitchen, living area and restroom with three other students, yet each student will have their own private sleeping quarters with a bed, desk and closet space.

MEALS

The total stipend for the semester will be broken down with a meal card and check. Both meal card and check will be available during orientation.

*Calendar Year students are not eligible for ISEP housing or meal benefits over the summer break.

Course Description

To find courses, visit the Course Catalog. This will allow you to see all courses that have been planned and approved at UAS for instruction. Next, cross-check your interested list of courses with UAS' Six-Year Course Sequence calendar to make sure that your courses are available during the desired semester. This will also allow you to view the method of which that class may be delivered (you must chose primarily in-person courses).

When looking at courses, you must choose courses at the Juneau campus. The Ketchikan and Sitka campuses are very far from the main Juneau campus.

While UAS offers many online courses, we ask that students limit their online course selection to 1 course. The schedule is typically available online by late March for Fall and late October for Spring.

Other Academic Conditions

Many classes and programs require placement tests and/or specific prerequisites. Additional course fees may be required, primarily in the outdoor studies, science and vocational classes. Not all course fees are covered in ISEP benefits. During applicants' research, students should carefully review how courses are delivered. Some programs, such as business administration, are primarily distance-delivered, meaning no in-the-classroom time but rather offered via the internet. If a student chooses to take a distance-delivered course this must be in addition to a full load of courses (at least 12 credits) on campus, per ISEP policy.

Certain syllabi may be available in advance to prospective students; contact your ISEP Student Advisor.

PASSPORT: All students must have a valid passport to participate in this program. If you do not have a valid passport, we suggest you start the application process as soon as possible.

VISA: All non-U.S. citizens will be required to obtain a visa. For more information on the process and estimated cost, please review the ISEP Country Handbook here.
